After the Earth Federation Forces decided to formally adopt the RMS-179 GM II as their next-generation mobile suit, the RGM-79CR GM Type CR was created as a test evaluation machine to investigate whether the Titans should adopt it as well. Using the RGM-79C GM Type C as a base, the sensors, thrusters, and other systems were upgraded to match the specifications of the GM II. The Type CR’s backpack contained an improved generator and a high performance sensor. A radiator duct was added to the right side of its chest, and another sub-sensor to the left side. The generators in its legs were also improved, vernier thrusters installed in its calves, and it could carry energy pack holders on its arms and skirt armor.
