The RGM-79SR GM Sniper III Cannon Pack Test type was a version of the long-range support mobile suit GM Sniper III which was equipped with a medium-range support unit, or “cannon pack,” for increased firepower. This so-called “cannon pack” allowed normal mobile suits to reproduce the functions of medium-range support machines like the RGC-80 GM Cannon through a simple backpack replacement. The Principality of Zeon previously applied the same concept to create the MS-14C Gelgoog Cannon. The addition of this cannon pack disrupted the GM Sniper III’s mass balance and reduced its originally high maneuverability, but dramatically increased its firepower. Although beam weapons were the standard armament at this point, because the GM Sniper III carried a high-output long-range beam rifle, the cannon pack used a projectile cannon to reduce the load on its generator. It also carried an RMS-117 Galbaldy β extendable shield. Since the beam rifle’s high output caused severe superheating in its barrel, two replacement barrels were attached to the shield.
