Gundam SEED DESTINY Phase 46: The Song of Truth

0
Summary

At Messiah, Durandal is informed that ZAFT has taken control of Daedalus and three additional Requiem relay stations. Durandal orders that the Minerva and lunar fleet be given some time off for their hard work. Durandal then says that allowing Requiem to fire was an oversight on their part that cost many lives. He says that they should build a peaceful world to atone to the dead. On the Minerva, Shinn and Rey practice shooting at the target range. Lunamaria asks him why he’s doing that when they have time off, and he says he just came along with Rey. Lunamaria walks off into the corridor, and Shinn asks her what’s wrong. She answers that nothing is wrong, but he knows she’s angry about something. She says she wanted to talk to him about Athrun and Meyrin. She says she can’t calm down when she thinks about them, and she doesn’t want Shinn to worry about what happened. The Archangel flies over the Moon’s surface and docks inside the city of Copernicus. In another part of the city, Meer sings sadly and thinks about what Athrun told her at Gibraltar. She thinks to herself that she did everything, not the other Lacus. She then thinks about Athrun telling her she’ll be killed and says it can’t possibly happen. Sarah brings a pot of tea, and Meer asks if there’s any news from Durandal. Sarah tells her that there’s no news and she needs to be aware that the situation is hectic, and Meer snaps at her. Sarah then says that the Archangel is in the city, and she wonders if that “other person” is with them. She says that the real Lacus believes in peace and guides the people in time of need. She says she believes that Meer is the real Lacus and offers to help her.

On the Archangel, Athrun loads his gun and joins Kira, Lacus and Meyrin in the corridor. The four leave for the city in a car, and Neo asks Murrue if that’s all right. Murrue says they’ll be safe, and Neo tells her he means she should go out too. Murrue says she’ll be fine on the ship, and Neo suggests that she escort him around the ship, perhaps to the baths. Kira drives through the city, unaware that he’s being watched. At a music store, Athrun and Kira bicker about being out while Lacus and Meyrin listen to music. They then visit a clothes store, and Meyrin and Lacus look at several dresses. Lacus tries on a few outfits, but when Kira says everything looks good, she wonders if he even cares. Suddenly, Meer’s red Haro appears and bounces into Lacus’ hands. The Haro has a message attached to it from Meer saying that she’s going to be killed, along with a map to a ruined stadium. Meyrin says that it’s obviously a trap, but Athrun says they can’t leave Meer alone. He tells Kira to take Lacus back to the ship while he calls for back up on his cell phone, but Lacus insists that she wants to meet Meer. At the ruined stadium, Meer runs over to Athrun when she sees him, but he pulls a gun on her. Sarah watches from nearby with a sniper rifle and is annoyed that Meer didn’t lure him onto the stage. Kira and Meyrin appear with guns drawn, and Lacus says hello to Meer. She tells Meer that if she thinks she’s going to be killed, she should come with them. Meer panics and insists that she is Lacus and pulls out a gun, but Athrun shoots it out of her hand. Lacus tells her that she can be Lacus if she wants, but even then they’re different people. She tells Meer that she should follow her own dreams and not be used by others. Torii flies by, and Athrun turns his head and spots Sarah just before she shoots. Several gunmen open fire, and every ducks into a hallway for safe cover. Athrun jumps out and kills several gunmen, and he also wounds Sarah in the arm. Another gunman tosses a grenade at the hallway, but Kira and the others reach safety. Athrun shoots the remaining gunmen, and when Sarah tosses a grenade, Kira and Meyrin shoot it back in her direction before it explodes. Neo lands in the stadium with the Akatsuki Gundam, and Kira tells him he’s late. As Lacus is about to climb into the Akatsuki Gundam’s hand, Meer sees that Sarah is about to fire and pushes Lacus out of the way. Meer takes the bullet and falls to the ground, and Athrun kills Sarah. Meer gives a picture of her real self to Lacus and asks Lacus not to forget her. She then says she is sorry and dies.

Commentary

I have to ask, was it really necessary at this point in the series to focus an entire episode to ANOTHER attempted assassination of Lacus? Or to waste time just to build up to Meer’s death? This time, instead of inept assassins being stylishly killed by Andy, we have inept assassins being stylishly killed by Athrun. Technically, this is the third attempt on Lacus. Back in SEED, Athrun killed a bunch of inept assassins in… you guessed it, a ruined theater. I feel a bit sorry for Meer because she allowed herself to become delusional about the “role” that Durandal created for her. She didn’t listen to Athrun’s warning, so this is what happened. Her death isn’t terribly effective, as it’s done in about the most cliched way possible. There’s only 4 episodes left after this, so I hope things get back on track with Durandal’s scheming and the inevitable final battle.
