VOTOMS Ep. 31: Nonaggression Zone

0
Summary

As the battle continues, Balarant Captain Pailuras Brewer watches from his Leslion class ship. He believes that Chirico and Fyana must be Perfect Soldiers based on their combat abilities. Two of his officers wonder if they were deliberately sent into Balarant territory to for a test battle. Brewer orders his men to press the attack and find a way to disable Space Battleship X‘s engines. Chirico destroys a Fatty and thinks of Lido when he sees the pilot’s corpse fly by. While he is distracted, several other Fattys attack and blow off one of his legs and damage his cockpit. Fyana rushes over to Chirico’s Scopedog II and hauls it back inside the ship. She rips open the cockpit and pulls Chirico out of it. She takes him to a small room and sees that he has a fever. He tells her she should leave him and surrender herself to the Balarant. Fyana ignores his pleas and sneaks over to the infirmary to find some medicine. She returns and treats Chirico’s illness. He tells her that Ypsilon would never abandon her, and he knows Ypsilon will come looking for her. He mumbles that he’s pathetic and that no one could love him. A Fatty breaks into the room, but Fyana destroys it with a bazooka. Suddenly, Space Battleship X‘s engines activate as it heads for a nearby planet. Fyana runs out of the room and is chased by several Fattys until she reaches her Scopedog II and destroys them. In the engine room several Fattys cut wires in an attempt to destroy the autopilot system. Fyana arrives and attacks them. She destroys several of the Fattys, but a few of them damage her Scopedog II’s leg and force her to abandon it and escape on foot.

Fyana climbs up a ladder and is knocked away when a Fatty fires at the ladder. Because she is now in a narrow corridor, the Fatty ends its pursuit and searches elsewhere. Fyana crawls through the narrow corridor and jumps down into a warehouse area filled with Scopedog parts. Two Fattys enter the warehouse and begin destroying the Scopedog parts. As they destroy the parts they spot Fyana running away and prepare to give chase. Brewer orders all Fattys to withdraw because Space Battleship X is entering the Nonaggression Zone. In the grip of a fever, Chirico recalls his balancing duel with Ypsilon and fidgets in his chair until Fyana returns to check on him. Brewer decides to proceed into the Nonaggression Zone by disguising his ship’s nationality and scrambling all messages. Nearby, the Teltain follows Space Battleship X and the Balarant fleet. Twin brothers Arron and Gurran Schmitel perform tests on Ypsilon and stop when they realize he’s in a bad mood. They call him over for another test hook him up to a machine while he watches an imagination tape created from Fyana’s memories. As Ypsilon watches the tape, he becomes furious when he sees images of Chirico. Arron and Gurran believe that if they can increase Ypsilon’s hatred of Chirico he will become a true Perfect Soldier. On the bridge, Captain Shimkas Futtor and his officers speculate how Chirico and Fyana could have escapes from Kummen onto a large battleship. The Teltain enters the Nonaggression Zone and is spotted by the Balarant, but Futtor wants to proceed with caution so that neither side discovers the Secret Society or the truth of the PS Project. Ypsilon takes a jijirium shower and screams out loud when he thinks of his last confrontation with Chirico in the jijirium pit. Fyana monitors Chirico’s condition and vows not to let him die.

Commentary

After three episodes aboard the mysterious Space Battleship X, it seems we’re finally approaching its destination. Things certainly don’ t look good right now. Chirico is sick and delusional, and Fyana has to defend him and herself from the Balarant attacks. On top of that, the Secret Society is pursuing them and Ypsilon is itching for a fight. With Borough dead, the Schmitel twins take his place as the Society’s resident schemers. Their objective is to pick up where Borough left off and condition Ypsilon to truly become a Perfect Soldier by killing Chirico. They seem like the types that would do anything to reach their desired results.
