Summary

Nie, covered in dirt and dirty clothes wanders past some people on the road, who are disgusted by his smell. On the Zelana, Marvel and Hon Wan plan on how they will be recovering him. Shou wonders why Marvel likes Nie so much even though he’s so obsessed with Riml. Marvel thinks that he is obsessed with her for information purposes, something Shou’s skeptical of. They decide to hide the Dunbine and Dana O’Shee in a sewer near Laas Wau. At that time Nie makes his way into the castle posing as a volunteer soldier. In his throne room, Drake order Garalia to head out on the Bull Beggar and see Furaon Elf, King of Ah. She’s to give him a fake letter that she’ll claim was found on Roman’s corpse stating that the House Given was going to team up with the Land of Mi to attack the Land of Ah. Through this forgery, Drake will get the permission from the King to attack Mi. Drake tells Bern to see Riml, but before that he goes to the armory, where Shot is working on a new Aura Battler. Nie manages to lead a stray horse into the courtyard so he can reach Riml’s room without suspicion and runs into Bern. Bern, fooled by his disguise goes to see Riml and makes his intentions of someday marrying her known. Riml, who is upset that war is coming wants nothing to do with him. Elsewhere, Keen learns from her father, Kibitsu Kiss, that he’s going to start serving Drake in order to restore the House of Kiss. This makes Keen extremely upset. At Elf Castle, Garalia receives permission from the King to attack the Land of Mi. Nie hears Drake’s plans at the castle and decides to rescue Riml immediately. Shou and Marvel head through the woods and arrive at the Zelana, where Keen has returned.

Marvel and Shou head out in their Aura Battlers. At Laas Wau, Nie sneaks his way through the castle’s corridors and runs into Kibitsu. Nie is disappointed to hear that he’s now serving under Drake. Shou and Marvel wait at the sewers near the castle. Marvel thinks back to when Nie left to save Riml. Hon Wan gave him a firefly to release when he needs help escaping. Back at the castle, Nie manages to knock out a couple of drunk guards and heads into Riml’s room. Riml is happy to see him after he removes his disguise. At that moment Bern meets with the guards in the hallway, who have now woken up. Nie and Riml head through the courtyard but run into Bern and some soldiers. Nie manages to shoot some soldiers, but Bern quickly captures her. Nie releases the firefly and Marvel sees it. Shou is angry at Nie and doesn’t want to save him but Marvel, who is very concerned about Nie manages to convince him. Nie steals a Drumlo and heads toward Drake’s bedroom in an attempt to assassinate him. Bern attacks him in the new Aura Battler Virunvee, though, and the two do battle. Facing a superior fighter, Nie runs into trouble but Marvel and Shou arrive to help him. Todd joins the fight as well in his new Drumlo. Although Marvel’s Dana O’Shee is damaged, Shou manages to knock away Bern and they escape. Shou expresses his anger at Nie once they return to the woods. At Laas Wau, Louser forbids Riml from leaving her room since she tried to escape with Nie.

Commentary

A lot’s going on in this episode with Nie’s attempted rescue of Riml, Drake tricking the King into letting him invade Mi, and Keen’s father betraying our heroes and joining Drake’s forces. Unfortunately for our heroes things just get worse and worse for them. Its bad enough that Nie’s father has died, but now Drake manages to trick the King into thinking he was a traitor as well! With that occurring Keen’s father has no choice but to abandon the House Given and side with Drake. Family conflicts are a common occurrence in Tomino’s work and it seems to be happening again here. All the various storylines going on make up for the episode’s main plot, which is another attempted rescue of Riml. That Nie would fool so many, including Riml herself with just a fake nose and fake teeth is quite ridiculous.
