The Fz-109A Elgersoln was the main variable fighter of the Varauta forces during the Protodeviln War of 2045-46. Unbeknownst to U.N. Spacy, the Fz-109A was based on captured U.N. Spacy VF-14 Vampire units. Additionally, the Varauta pilots themselves were U.N. Spacy personnel brainwashed by the Protodeviln. Intended primarily as a space fighter, the Fz-109A featured a cockpit that also functioned as an escape pod. Its armaments included two gun pods, a large-bore blaster, a rapid laser gun, eight micro-missile launchers and an optional prototype heavy blaster. Like other Varauta fighters, the Fz-109A mounted a Spiritia absorption beam that could sap Spiritia life force out of enemy pilots, leaving them alive but comatose. During the Protodeviln War, Spiritia sapping had a devastating effect on the frontline pilots of the Macross 7 emigrant fleet until music-based countermeasures were developed. The Varauta also created a commander type variant, the Fz-109F.
