Based on the Gundam Thrones series, the GNX-509T Throne Varanus served as the prototype for the GNX-603T GN-X. Despite having similar silhouette as the GN-X, the Throne Varanus was built using many Gundam Thrones parts. The suit was designed to be easier to operate, and one of its major differences with the Gundam Thrones was the presence of four protruding GN Particle Generators on the shoulders and hips that were designed to simplify the control of the suit. Thanks to these devices, pilots unfamiliar with the control of GN Drive-equipped suits, which used GN particles to help control the suit, could get used to the suit in a very short time. Like the Gundam Thrones, the Throne Varanus was powered by a GN Drive Tau. However, as the suit lacked the starter mechanism for the Drive, it required external activation before use like the GN-X. Like the GN-X, the Throne Varanus’ cockpit was in the waist. The Throne Varanus’ head was fitted with a prototype sensor on the forehead that was based on the GNW-002 Gundam Throne Zwei‘s head. The suit’s head is large compared to the GN-X’s, as it waas not optimized yet. The hip-mounted GN particle generators were of a different design from those on the shoulder and were similar in design to those used by Team Trinity’s warship and the hs-T01 Turbulenz equipment. This design was not used by the GN-X due to their complexity.

The suit’s weapons also used many Gundam Thrones parts. The GN Long Barrel Beam Rifle was a prototype of the GN-X’s GN Long Barrel Beam Rifle. The rifle’s sensor, GN particle supply system, etc., all used the same parts as the GNW-001 Gundam Throne Eins. The GN Chain Gun was an improvement of the Gundam Thrones’ GN Handgun. The weapon had low firepower but could be used in a wide variety of situations, like restricting the opponent’s movement. The GN-X used similar weaponry in the form of GN Vulcans. The GN Defense Rod was a combination of the GN Field with a defense rod. The defense rod was used widely by the AEU and Union, so many pilots were skilled at using them. The GN-X’s shield was an improvement of this defensive equipment, and could be used like a standard shield. The suit’s GN Shield was identical as the one used by the Throne Eins. Besides functioning as a shield, it also served as a GN Condenser, supplying the GN Long Barrel Beam Rifle with the required GN particles. In order to mass produce the Throne Varanus, Alejandro Corner invited Deborah Galiena to be the suit’s test pilot. Galiena was well versed in the control system of various factions’ suits, as her job involved inspecting each faction’s military equipment. It was thanks to her operational data and feedback that the GN-X could be used easily by pilots from various nations.
