The GNY-001 Gundam Astraea was the first of the second generation Gundams created by Celestial Being, based on the first generation GN-000 0 Gundam. Celestial Being used the second generation to test special designs and weaponry types for the future combat deployment of the third generation Gundams. The Gundam Astraea served as the predecessor to the GN-001 Gundam Exia. The second generation was developed in the space colony Krung Thep, and the Gundam Astraea was designated as a general purpose unit. Named after the goddess of justice in tarot cards, the suit was primarily tested with optional equipment. The Gundam Astraea was equipped with a three-thruster GN Drive, which had a different control system and could produce higher propulsion, but at the cost of stressing the GN Drive and reducing stability. Later on, the suit was used to test the cone-shaped design for the third generation and was redesignated at the GNY-001B Gundam Astraea Type B, although this change was later reverted due to the cone design negatively impacting the suit’s balance. The suit used clavicle antennae to control GN particles, and it could also disrupt radar and radio waves. The antennae could be removed to mount optional equipment, but this reduced the suit’s ability to control GN particles. Due to the early development state of the antennae, they generated a wide interference area. The antennae were later miniaturized to avoid interference, and blade-shaped antennae were mounted on the cheeks to suppress interference.

The suit featured multiple hardpoints on the forearms and legs to mount equipment, which were powered by GN Condensers. The hardpoints were removed from the Gundam Exia. The suit was armed with a GN Beam Rifle, GN Shield, GN Beam Sabers and up to four GN Launchers, which were later redesigned as the GN-005 Gundam Virtue‘s GN Bazooka. It was also equipped with a Proto GN Sword, a large blade enveloped in GN particles. The Proto GN Sword design was later improved by added ranged weaponry, as seen in the Gundam Exia’s GN Sword. The Gundam Astraea was used in several small-scale interventions on Earth. After testing was completed on the second generation Gundams, the units were later transferred to Celestial Being’s support group, Fereshte. The Gundam Astraea was upgraded and painted red, redesignated as the GNY-001F Gundam Astraea Type F.
