Gundam AGE Ep. 11: Reunion at Minsry

0
Summary

In his quarters on the Diva, Flit thinks about the recent battle and wonders if he’s doing the right thing. He then thinks of Yurin and pulls out her ribbon. Emily walks in and asks what that is, but he answers that it’s nothing and stuff it into his pocket. In the mobile suit hangar, Largan asks Vargas what Minsry is like, and Vargas explains that it was made to look like Old Earth and is supposedly the most beautiful of all the colonies. Largan comments that Grodek is daring by putting together a combat force to attack the UE even while he’s being pursued by the EFF. Millais asks if they’ve seen Woolf, and Vargas mentioned he left just a minute ago. She finds Woolf in the gym and asks if he shouldn’t be working on his suit, but he answers that he has faith in the mechanics. She says something doesn’t feel right about the upcoming battle and wonders if they’re doing the right thing. Woolf responds that it’s only human to be doubtful before heading into a battle where you might die. Millais then leaves the gym, unaware that Largan is hiding around the corner. The Diva then arrives at Minsry and enters its dock. Inside the colony, Grodek, Flit, Largan, Millais, Ract and Woolf get on a boat to travel to the mansion of Alzack Birmings, an old friend of Boyage’s. Everyone is amazed by the colony, but Grodek cautions them to be alert of the EFF. Millais asks about Birmings, and Largan wonders if they can trust him, to which Woolf answers that even if they can’t trust him, they have to rely on him. Back on the Diva, Vargas works to fulfill Grodek’s request to use the AGE System to upgrade the ship’s combat systems. Dique asks if it can even do that, and Emily asks if two weeks will be enough time for an upgrade. Vargas explains that the AGE System was designed exclusively to evolve the Gundam, so he doesn’t know if it’ll work on a ship. Vargas is surprised when the AGE System begins working on upgrades like photon blaster cannon, which is more powerful than a standard EFF hyper mega particle cannon. Vargas wonders if they can make the modifications, but Emily says she knows who can help. Inside the colony, everyone hikes on foot to the mansion, and Flit runs off when he hears a branch break. He chases after Yurin through the bushes, and she’s surprised to see him. At the spaceport, EFF officer Stoller Guavaran munches on a chocolate bar and begins his search for Grodek. Grodek and the others reach the mansion and are introduced to Birmings, who comments that he never expected Boyage to be killed. Grodek comments that they were all saved by Boyage, and Birmings agrees to help them out. Yurin tells Flit that she was taken in at Minsry after losing her family in a UE attack. She was sent to Nora to be adopted by Birmings, but she ran away, which is how she encountered Flit. Flit tells Yurin that he also lost his parents to the UE and decided to fight. Yurin asks Flit if she can ride the Gundam because she wants to float in space and see the stars. Flit pulls out the ribbon and says it was like a good luck charm, so Yurin tells him he should keep it. Grodek sees the picture of Yurin, and Birmings comments that she hasn’t opened her heart to him yet. Madorna boards the Diva and decides to perform the modifications Vargas wants. Guavaran is informed that Grodek is meeting with Birmings at his mansion.

Flit meets with Birmings, who asks if it’s true that he stopped the civil war on Fardain. Flit humbly answers that he’s not sure of that, but that Boyage and Ract understood his words. Birmings says that Flit’s words moved two adults stuck in the past, so he might be the person to right the twistedness of the world. Flit asks Birmings to give Yurin a family and says that’s what she needs, even if it takes time. Flit and the others have meetings to discuss the attack plan on Ambat. He also spends time with Yurin in the forest, and two weeks quickly pass. Flit tells Yurin that he’ll be leaving tomorrow, and Yurin wonders if she’s going to be alone again. Flit then vows that he’ll come back to see her once the fighting is over, and she hugs him. At the final meeting, Grodek explains the attack plan for Ambat. While their space fleet divides the fire of the UE, the mobile suits will use the confusion to infiltrate Ambat. Woolf asks who’s going to protect the Diva, and Grodek explains that their attack force will be small: only the Diva‘s suits. As their boat leaves the mansion, Flit sees Yurin on the riverbank. Grodek senses that something is wrong, and two Genoaces suddenly emerge from behind the tree line. Guavaran blocks the path in his boat and orders Grodek to surrender. Grodek is handcuffed and says they’ll never be bale to attack the UE now. After the boat leaves, Largan wonders what they’re going to do now, so Flit declares they should save Grodek and keep up the fight against the UE, even if the EFF won’t. He then pulls out the AGE device to call Vargas. Grodek tells Guavaran that the EFF is hiding the true identity of the UE, but before he can say more, the AGE-1 Normal appears and blocks their path. Guavaran orders the Genoace pilots to fight, and Flit cuts the legs off one with his beam saber. The other Genoace opens fire and dodges when Flit tries to attack. He rushes forward and sticks his beam saber in the water, creating a cloud of steam that blinds the pilot and allows Flit to disable the suit. Guavaran wants to escape, but Woolf pulls up in the boat and threatens him with a gun. After Grodek is freed, he shoots the boat’s radio and asks them to hand over all communications devices. After they leave, Guavaran pulls out a communicator disguised as a pen and orders his fleet to prepare for battle. Madorna finishes the modifications to the Diva, and Vargas says they’ll have to test them in the field.

Commentary

This episode mixes together a few good elements as it advances the story. Flit is finally reunited with Yurin, and they spend a lot of time together over the course of two weeks. We find out that she was adopted by Birmings, who looks like he belongs in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I wouldn’t say it’s exactly a love triangle, but Flit’s time with Yurin will probably be an issue with Emily in the future. Speaking of love triangles, it appears as though Largan may have a thing Millais. But given that he pilots the worst mobile suit on the ship, I don’t expect him to have a bright future. Based on the various comments about Old Earth, I wonder if the planet is a lifeless ruin. Various people are surprised by the beauty of Minsry, and after all the series up to now hasn’t even shown what Earth looks like. Grodek’s past catches up to him when he’s arrested by Guavaran, a chocolate-obsessed weirdo. The fight in this episode is rather brief, but it’s interesting to see the tactics Flit uses to disable human opponents as opposed to when he’s fighting the UE. Madorna makes a brief return to help upgrade the Diva, and I’m curious to see how those updates will perform in battle.
