Macross Delta Mission 4: Shocking Debut Stage

0
Summary

On Windermere, Bogue angrily vows to destroy the Earthlings and Walkure until told to calm down by Hermann. Roid monitors the way relics resonate with Heinz singing the Wing Song, but the young prince collapses from exhaustion. His brother Keith urges him to keep singing and be the wind for their wings. On Ragna, a TV commercial advertises Freyja’s Walkure debut for a Vaccine show on planet Randall. Xaos staff attend a welcome party at Rag-Nyan Nyan for Hayate and Freyja. Makina explains to Hayate and Freyja that their singing generates biological fold waves that can cure or prevent Var, so the Randall government requested a Vaccine show because of rising risk of an outbreak. Mirage tells Hayate to be careful and follow her orders if the unknown enemy reappears. Kaname tells Arad that they don’t have time to wait for Freyja’s abilities to stabilize, and Messer leaves the party for standby duty. Freyja feels sick after the party from eating too much food, so Hayate brings her apple juice. Mikumo stands naked on a mountaintop and wonders why people sing. The next day, the battleship Aether separates from the Macross Elysion and transforms into cruiser mode for space travel. Hayate is pleased to see his Siegfried, which according to a video from Makina has been customized so he doesn’t have to use a helmet. He teases Freyja about having stage fright and asks about a small device that she’s carrying and had on Al Shahal. She explains that an Earthling gave it to her on Windermere, which is how she learned about outside music like Lynn Minmay, Fire Bomber, Sheryl Nome, Ranka Lee and Walkure. Hayate reminds her that if she risks her life she can fly, which cheers her up. After she leaves, Mirage comments on how Windermerians have extreme physical abilities, but at the cost of only living 30 years. The Aether de-folds near Randall, and Mikumo frankly tells Freyja that if her performance isn’t satisfactory, she’s out of Walkure. On the surface, a massive crowd gathers and cheers when Delta Flight and the Walkure shuttle descend from above. The members of Walkure jump out of the shuttle and activate their costumes, with Freyja nervously jumping out last and making a rough landing.

Freyja nervously introduces herself, which the crowd finds endearing. Mikumo announces that they’ll open the show with “Uncertain Cosmic Movement” and whispers to Freyja that she’s done if she fails. Freyja starts singing after everyone’s costumes transform, and dancing holograms appear above the stage. In the skies above, Delta Flight unleashes colored smoke trails. Hayate goes off plan and starts dancing above the stage in battroid mode. Kaname monitors the risk of Var outbreak, which is decreasing as they sing. However, Reina notices that Freyja’s fold receptors are not active. On Windermere, Roid watches the concert and orders the Aerial Knights to attack. The Aerial Knights deploy their Lil Draken drones, which jams Walkure’s fold wave amplification and deactivates their multidrones. They also fire missiles directly at the stage, but all five planes in Delta Flight block the way and shoot them down. Nightmare Pluses from NUNS arrive as reinforcements, but Heinz starts singing and afflicts them with Var. The NUNS pilots open fire on Delta Flight, and Chuck uses the radome on his Siegfried to confirm that they’re infected. When the afflicted pilots start shooting at Walkure, Arad orders the squadron to focus on prioritizing the safety of Walkure and the civilians. Hayate, Mirage and Chuck object to attacking allies, but Messer argues that it doesn’t matter because they’re enemies now. He shoots down a Nightmare Plus and states that both they and NUNS pilots knew what they were signing up for. Mirage hesitates when trying to target a Nightmare Plus, which allows Bogue’s Draken III to sneak up behind her. Messer provides assistance, but his Siegfried then comes under fire from Keith’s custom Draken III. A pair of missiles nearly hit Kaname and Freyja, and Hayate slams into a Nightmare Plus to prevent it from attacking them. He then deploys his pinpoint barrier when the Nightmare Plus opens fire, but it gets overloaded and Hayate loses his right arm. He then rushes in and tackles the Nightmare Plus. Mikumo starts singing and opens the cockpit to heal the pilot. Freyja also sings and helps heal the other NUNS pilots. Kaname and the others are impressed by Freyja’s talents and how she and Mikumo are amplifying each other without any help. Ernest calls Arad and tells him this was all a distraction because the enemy just invaded planet Voldor. The Drakens then drop their optical camouflage, which reveals them as Windermere’s Aerial Knights. They broadcast a large hologram of Roid, who announces that the Windermere Kingdom is declaring war on the New U.N. Government.

Commentary

Hayate and Freyja make literally explosive debuts with Delta Flight and Walkure, respectively. We see a new planet where there’s been a request for a Vaccine show. It’s interesting to learn that Walkure’s singing has both a curative and preventative effect. However, Heinz’s singing in some relic-filled room is enough to trigger Var in a bunch of NUNS pilots. The show becomes a messy battlefield, and while Mirage’s hesitation is a mistake, Messer’s shooting down of NUNS pilots is pretty cold-hearted. The rest of Walkure sees that Freyja has untapped potential, but Mikumo is pushing her pretty hard to force it out with frequent threats of dismissal. I’m not sure that’s helping, since her abilities only seem to manifest in life-threatening situations. The episode ends on a pretty high note with Windermere having revealed itself, invaded Voldor and declared war on the U.N. Government. Their true purpose, however, remains to be seen.
