Despite the high performance of the transformable mobile suits introduced during the Gryps War, their complexity and high cost proved to be serious problems. As part of its research into lower cost transformable mobile suits, Anaheim Electronics developed the MSZ-006R Zeta plus R, which docked with a sub-flight system known as the Back Weapon System (BWS). This system provided the mobile suit with additional weapons storage as well as flight capabilities. This prototype machine was based on the MSZ-006C1 Zeta plus C1, and the data obtained from it was later used to develop the RGZ-91 Re-GZ.
