The introduction of the Earth Federation Forces’ Salamis class cruiser predated the development of mobile suits. As a result, during the One Year War many RGM-79 GM units were strapped directly to the outer hulls of Salamis ships. In September UC 0079, the EFF base at Luna II began the process of converting some Salamis ships into the newly designated Nelson class light carriers. A similar process saw Magellan class ships converted into the new Trafalgar class. The Nelson class featured cargo bays on the port and starboard sides of the ship. Its armaments included six mega particle cannons, four 2-barrel machine guns and eight missile launchers. The conversion process was delayed due to accidents and attacks on the supply fleets transporting the necessary materials. As a result, the first Nelson class ship was not completed until February UC 0080. The initial ship was assigned as a mobile suit training ship. Two additional ships were later completed, and the planned conversion of eight additional Salamis ships was restarted.
