As the focus of the One Year War shifted into space, the Earth Federation Forces began designing a new Gundam for space combat, and the end result was the RX-78-7 Gundam 7th. The Gundam 7th was designed to equip Full Armor parts, and as a result the body was covered with mounting latches. The powerplant was more powerful than that of the RX-78-2 Gundam, however, there were sub generators installed in the Full Armor parts to not allow a drop in usable time. The Gundam 7th’s performance was in the class of the RX-78NT-1 Gundam “Alex” and was similarly equipped with magnetic coating and a prototype panoramic monitor/linear seat cockpit. The One Year War ended in January UC 0080 with only the basic frame of the Gundam 7th completed. In UC 0081, the completed Gundam 7th was assigned to pilot Hugues Courand of the Phantom Sweep unit, which was tasked with hunting down a Zeon remnant group known as the Invisible Knights.
