The RX-78KU-01 Kurwenal was a mobile weapons platform designed to support Quentin Fermo’s RX-78AN-01 Gundam AN-01 Tristan. The Kurwenal’s name was inspired by Tristan and Isolde, an opera based on the tale for which the Tristan was named. The Tristan docked at the center of the Kurwenal, not unlike the Earth Federation Forces’ earlier RX-78GP03 Gundam GP03 Dendrobium. It was unknown how Birnam acquired the Kurwenal’s armaments and exterior equipment. The Kurwenal’s armaments included a pair of beam cannons, wired beam sabers, missile pods, laser containers, and two large shot claws. In UC 0096, Quentin used the Tristan and Kurwenal to attack the EFF special unit Mastema, which had traveled to the asteroid Axis on a mission to secure psychoframe research data following the Laplace Incident. Quentin faced off against the incomplete mobile armor AMA-X4 Ahava Azieru and was able to find off Arlette Almage’s attacks. A Newtype reaction initiated by Arlette’s psychoframe sample piece ended the battle.
