As the Black Rebellion collapsed, Black Knights leader Zero (actually outcast Britannian prince Lelouch Lamperouge) lost his personal Knightmare, the IFX-V3D1 Gawain, in a battle with the Knight Giga Fortress FXF-503Y Siegfried. During the intervening year, Black Knights engineer Rakshata Chawla recovered the Gawain, salvaged whatever components she could, and used them to build Zero a new Knightmare. This machine, dubbed the Type-0/0A Shinkirou (Japanese for “mirage”), was specially designed to the masked man’s abilities, covering his poor piloting skills and enhancing his ability to dominate the battlefield through strategy and real-time tactics. The Shinkirou mounted the Gawain’s Druid System, a highly advanced computer and analysis complex, which it used to manage its offensive and defensive capabilities. The defense came in the form of the absolute protection territory, a fortress-level defense made up of several smaller energy shields which required precise coordination by both the pilot and the Druid System in order to maximize its effectiveness. The offense was primarily marked by the structural phase transition cannon, a powerful energy weapon mounted in the Shinkirou’s chest. The cannon made use of a special liquid metal prism which could refract the energy in many directions, allowing it to sweep through the battlefield with almost no effort. In addition to this, the Shinkirou mounted a pair of lower-powered hadron guns in its forearms. In addition to all these abilities, the Shinkirou could transform into an amphibious Fortress Mode, which Lelouch used to maintain his cover identity as a high school student and throw off Britannia’s attempts to track him. The Shinkirou remained Lelouch’s personal machine even after the Black Knights turned against him and he conquered Britannia, declaring himself the 99th Emperor. However, during the decisive battle between Lelouch and his brother Schneizel El Britannia, the Shinkirou sustained critical damage at the hands of Knight of Three Gino Weinberg and his RZA-3F9X1 Tristan Divider, destroying the machine.
