The crash landing of Alien Starship-1 (ASS-1) on Earth in 1999 forever altered the course of human technological development. Examination and reverse engineering of the ASS-1 (later redesignated Macross) led to the development of OverTechnology and the introduction of the VF-1A Valkyrie, the world’s first mass production variable fighter. Manufactured by Northrom, the Valkyrie featured three-stage Fighter, GERWALK and Battroid transformations, along with thermonuclear reaction engines which allowed it to operate both on Earth and in space. The Valkyrie’s standard armaments included a Howard Gatling gun pod, a Mauler anti-aircraft laser cannon and multiple options for bombs and missiles mounted on underwing hardpoints. The VF-1’s armaments could also be enhanced with the optional space-use FAST Pack or the GBP-1S weapon system. The VF-1 served as U.N. Spacy’s main variable fighter during Space War I and for several years after, and the name “Valkyrie” itself became synonymous with variable fighters. Four variants were created during the VF-1’s production run, with the A-type being the most common.
