The VF-1J Valkyrie was a variant of the VF-1A manufactured by Shinnakasu Heavy Industries for use by U.N. Spacy. Its design was mostly identical to the standard VF-1A, although it incorporated a different head design with a second anti-aircraft laser cannon. The VF-1J was typically assigned to officers and squadron leaders, although one was assigned to new recruit Hikaru Ichijyo in April 2009 on the Macross. Several months later, Hikaru was promoted for his service on Mars and assigned as leader of the new Vermilion Team, with VF-1A pilots Maximilian Jenius and Hayao Kakizaki serving under him. Ace pilot Milia Fallyna Jenius kept her VF-1J unit for over 30 years and maintained it in top condition. She lent her VF-1J to Macross 7 pilot Gamlin Kizaki in 2045, and it was subsequently destroyed by the Protodeviln Sivil.
