VOTOMS Ep. 51: Carnage

Summary

Vanilla, Gotho, Coconna and Shako take off in a shuttle and fly through the atmosphere to escape from Quent. Vanilla calls Fyana on the radio and tells her to forget about Chirico, but she refuses. Vanilla says that either he’s brainwashed or doing it out of free will, but he’s no longer the man they knew. The Gilgamesh and Balarant ships begin to land on Quent’s surface, and a Society AT Landing Craft lands to unload Zwerg support units for Chirico. The Zwerg squad meets up with Chirico, and he orders them to break through the enemy’s frontline. As they approach, hundreds of Scopedogs and Fattys open fire. Chirico takes the lead and attacks them with the Rabidly Dog‘s machine gun and claw/cannon. Although many Zwergs are destroyed in the process, Chirico and his men manage to go right through the enemy’s front line. One of the pilots reports that a third of the Zwergs have already been destroyed, and Chirico reminds them that their job is to make sure he stays alive until the end. As they travel across the desert, Chirico calls the Secret Society Flagship and orders Gurran to begin his part of the operation. In Quent’s orbit, the flagship emerges from behind the asteroid it was hiding in for cover, but it is immediately picked up by the enemy fleet. Ahead of Chirico, more Gilgamesh dropships land and unload their Scopedog units. Chirico attacks a group of Scopedogs with help from his Zwergs. From a hillside position, Fyana provides cover fire for Chirico. Chirico and his men destroy an entire squad of Scopedogs, and he orders them to steal the dropship. As the dropship takes off, Fyana’s Berserga DT speeds across the sand and grabs hold of one of the dropship’s legs. Chirico pilots the dropship as it flies over all the Gilgamesh forces and heads for the crevasse where Shako’s village is located.

The Scopedogs on the ground open fire on Chirico’s dropship, along with the dropships and battleships in the air. Chirico calls Gurran and orders him to shoot down the attacking ships. The flagship opens fire and destroys several of the dropships attacking Chirico. The dropship is damaged in the attack, and Chirico steers it towards the edge of the crevice. The dropship makes a rough descent until it finally touches down in the canyon’s floor. Fyana drops down from her position and hides just before Chirico and his men emerge from the dropship. They come under fire from Scopedogs riding on Dog Carrier sleds, but Chirico takes a position behind a rock and destroys many of them. Chirico and his men move through the valley floor and are chased by more Scopedogs. The damaged flagship makes a freefall into the crevasse and crashes on the canyon’s floor. Large rocks smash into the ground, destroying many Scopedogs and blocking the paths of others. Gurran is mortally wounded in an explosion, and Rochina tells him he’ll have an honorable death. Gurran asks him what he’s doing, and Rochina says he wants to be sure Chirico is worthy of being Wiseman’s successor. Rochina escapes in a hovercraft and is knocked to the ground when the flagship explodes. Chirico finally reaches the underground complex, but he only has two Zwergs left with him. Gilgamesh Commander-in-Chief Gilges Togol and Balarant Commander-in-Chief Regulas Minitri order the Scopedog pilots to make sure Chirico is killed. Chirico destroys several Scopedogs, but his machine gun runs out of ammo. One of the Zwergs is destroyed, and Chirico tosses a grenade from his backpack. His claw runs out of ammo, and the last remaining Zwerg is destroyed. The left arm of the Rabidly Dog is destroyed, and Fyana attacks several of the Scopedogs from behind. The Rabidly Dog and two Scopedogs fall into a large pit. Chirico destroys the two Scopedogs with his arm punch and is spoken to directly by Wiseman. Chirico asks Wiseman why he doesn’t help, and Wiseman says that only a man who has made the entire galaxy his enemy and has the skill to survive is worthy of being the Successor. Chirico tells Wiseman that he wants to become omnipotent and plunge the galaxy into a hell of unending war so that he can have his revenge.

Commentary

We’re down to the end, and Chirico cuts a path of destruction unlike anything seen in the series up to now. He literally takes on hundreds of ATs and manages to survive. Of course, the flagship and all the Zwergs have been destroyed, leaving him completely alone. Fyana is closely tailing him, but he doesn’t seem to be aware of her presence. Gurran meets his fate, and it seems Rochina is still on the hunt to be sure that Chirico is worthy of being Wiseman’s successor. Chirico finally hears the voice of Wiseman, but it looks like Wiseman is still testing Chirico to the very end to determine his worth. Well, Chirico has succeeded in making the entire galaxy his enemy up to now. We’ll see in the last episode if his dark ambitions are fulfilled.
