In late C.E. 73, ZAFT began replacing the aging aerial combat mobile suit AMF-101 DINN with the newer, transformable AMA-953 BABI. The transforming BABI was more heavily armed than the DINN, featuring weapons such as a chest-mounted beam cannon, missile launchers, machine guns, a beam rifle and an air gunlauncher. Soon after the BABI was rolled out, it was deployed in areas such as Berlin during ZAFT’s attempt to destroy the monstrous GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam. The BABI was also used in high numbers during Operation Ragnarok, an attack on the Earth Alliance’s Heavens Base headquarters in Ireland, as well as Operation Fury, an attack on the Orb Union.
