Created by Anaheim Electronics as part of the Earth Federation Forces’ secret Gundam Development Project, the FF-XII Core Fighter II functioned as the escape craft and cockpit of the RX-78GP01 Gundam GP01 Zephyranthes. It was an improved version of the FF-X7 Core Fighter used by the RX-78-2 Gundam during the One Year War. The Core Fighter II featured a more aerodynamic design than the original for improved flight. Due to the Core Fighter II containing the GP01’s generator and main thrusters, the GP01 could be changed from ground to space configuration by swapping out the Core Fighter. The Core Fighter II also housed the GP01’s beam sabers, which functioned as beam guns.
In October UC 0083, the Core Fighter II and GP01 were delivered by the assault carrier Albion to the Torrington Base for testing. When Zeon remnants attacked and stole the RX-78GP02A Gundam GP02A Physalis, the GP01 was taken into battle by rookie pilot Kou Uraki. During the subsequent chase for the GP02A, Kou used the Core Fighter II for scouting duty. A second Core Fighter II was stolen by an Anaheim worker named Orville who was revealed to be a Zeon spy, but he was shot down by friendly fire to prevent the reveal of a Zeon base in Africa. Later, after the ground configured GP01 was heavily damaged in a space battle, Anaheim mechanics repaired and upgraded the Core Fighter II into the FF-XIIFb Core Fighter IIFb.
