The advent of the mobile suit in the One Year War changed the rules for space combat. With their smaller size and higher mobility, mobile suits were capable of single-handedly destroying a battleship. After the war, the Earth Federation Forces upgraded its aging Magellan class, which entered service prior to the creation of mobile suits. To bolster anti-mobile suit defenses, the upgraded Magellans replaced their machine gun turrets with laser turrets. In November UC 0083, multiple modified Magellans were destroyed when Anavel Gato fired a nuclear warhead at the EFF’s naval review at Confeito. Surviving ships chased after the remnant Zeon Delaz Fleet when it conducted a colonyjack. Due to the Magellan’s continued poor performance in the era of mobile suit combat, the entire class was retired by UC 0087 in favor of the upgraded Salamis type.
