The Spartan was a Pegasus class assault carrier constructed by the Earth Federation Forces. Like other ships of its class, it was constructed from multiple blocks, including living quarters that feature an artificial gravity area. Differences in construction resulted in some Pegasus ships having radically different appearances. The Spartan also utilized a Minovsky craft system, which allowed it to fly at low altitudes on Earth and escape unassisted from the planet’s atmosphere. The Spartan was unique compared to its sister ships due to some different features, which included the ability for certain sections of the ship to transform for atmospheric reentry. The Spartan was also equipped with four hover landing craft that were docked above the ship’s “legs.” These craft featured cockpits for crew and could transport mobile suits to a mission start point.

In August UC 0080, the Spartan was attacked during atmospheric reentry by Zeon remnants using a Komusai on a suicide mission. The kamikaze craft was destroyed by One Year War veteran Io Fleming’s new RX-78AL Atlas Gundam. The Spartan was then tasked with investigating the South Seas Alliance, a breakaway Asian territory that had secretly acquired the MS-06R High Mobility Type “Psycho Zaku”, an advanced Zeon mobile suit that Io engaged during the war in the Thunderbolt Sector. The Spartan encountered Zeon remnants on patrol in Antarctica and was later attacked by South Seas Alliance forces, which were under mind control by cult leader Levan Fuu. The ship’s crew was forced to fight off an attack utilizing both mobile suits and invading ground troops.
