ZAFT’s transport ship Eternal was designed to exclusively support two mobile suits: the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam and ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. In addition to serving as a home base for these two suits, the Eternal also carried their METEOR mobile weapons platforms. The Eternal had an internal hangar and linear launch catapult for both Gundams, while the METEOR units were docked on the outer hull at the ship’s forward end. As a support ship, the Eternal was armed with a beam cannon, CIWS turrets and many missile launchers. However, when docked the METEOR units could function as gun turrets to increase the Eternal‘s firepower. On July 1, C.E. 71, the Eternal was stolen by Lacus Clyne and her supporters, including former North African commander Andrew Waltfeld. The rogue ship then joined with the rebel Earth Alliance ship Archangel and the Orb Union ship Kusanagi to create the Three Ships Alliance, a new faction independent of both the Alliance and ZAFT that was dedicated to ending the war. In the years following the Bloody Valentine War, the Eternal was hidden inside the factory satellite Terminal, which was camouflaged as a large asteroid. After the fall of the Atlantic Federation’s headquarters Heavens Base in Iceland, the Eternal was discovered by ZAFT when the ship’s crew investigated the abandoned Mendel colony for information about Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal.
