Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is a TV series that aired in Japan from 2002-2003. This alternate universe series was directed by Mitsuo Fukuda with mechanical designs by Kunio Okawara and Kimitoshi Yamane, character designs by Hisashi Hirai and a score by Toshihiro Sahashi. Set in C.E. (Cosmic Era) 71, the world is divided by genetically unaltered Naturals who are at war with genetically engineered Coordinators. A young Coordinator named Kira Yamato is pulled into the war when his neutral space colony is destroyed by ZAFT, which results in him becoming a mobile suit pilot for the Earth Alliance. Less than a year after the series’ conclusion, Fukuda created a trilogy of “Special Edition” compilation movies, followed in 2004 by the sequel series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY. At the same time, Gundam SEED aired in North America on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block. Nearly a decade after its original Japanese broadcast, Sunrise created an HD remaster that featured new animation and deleted two clip episodes. The HD remaster of the TV series and the movies are available on home video in North America from Nozomi Entertainment, although the movies are exclusive to the premium Ultimate Edition box set.
