The GNY-004 Gundam Plutone was a second generation Gundam created by Celestial Being. Like the other second generation suits, it was intended to test designs and weapons for the upcoming combat deployment of the third generation Gundams. The Gundam Plutone served as the predecessor to two third generation designs, the GNY-0042-874 Gundam Artemie and GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh. Since there were only five GN Drives, Veda placed a high priority on protecting them and equipped each Gundam with the ability to eject its drive in an emergency. However, the Gundam Plutone went a step further with its Core Fighter system, which allowed the cockpit and GN Drive to be ejected. The Gundam Plutone was initially slated to include a Twin Drive System, but this was dropped due to the difficulties in synchronizing two drives. Veda initially planned to install the Trial System on the Gundam Plutone, and even the staff at Krung Thep were unaware of the plan. The Trial System allowed an authorized user to control any Veda-linked suit, but Veda cancelled the plan after determining that Gundam Meister Chall Acustica was unsuitable for the task. The Gundam Plutone was the first Gundam to incorporate a 360-degree protective GN Field, which was formed by the release of GN particles from field generators mounted across its body. However, the GN Field was unstable in this early form, so engineers developed GN Composite Armor as a fallback. A GN Field was generated between two layers of armor, which kept the field stable, but didn’t protect exposed parts. The suit was also equipped with a composite sensor, and a rear-mounted large GN Condenser allowed a large amount of particles to be available to help negate the high consumption of particles by the GN Field and other systems. The suit’s armaments included a GN Beam Rifle, GN Shield and two GN Beam Sabers.
In 2292, Celestial Being learned of a planned terrorist attack on the HRL’s orbital elevator. Because Celestial Being was not ready to show itself to the world, Veda decided against interfering. However, Gundam Meisters Ruido Resonance and Marlene Vlady disagreed and devised a plan to stop the attack while disguising their presence. Ruido’s plan was to lure enemies away and cause the Gundam Plutone’s GN Condenser to malfunction and release GN particles to disable enemy suits. Chall was intended to escape in the Core Fighter, protected by the GNY-001 Gundam Astraea and GNY-003 Gundam Abulhool. However, during the mission, the Core Fighter failed to detach from the Gundam Plutone. In addition, the energy level of the GN particles was far above the predicted numbers and had the potential of destroying the GN Drive. GN particles were poisonous in certain high-energy states, and exposure to such a large amount of particles killed Ruido and Marlene, while Chall was left with scars and white hair. Following the “Plutone Tragedy,” more research was conducted on the harmful effects of GN particles, and the Gundams were adjusted to prevent this situation from reoccurring. When Chall became the leader of the support group Fereshte, all four second generation Gundams were transferred to the group. Due to her desire to limit use of the Gundam Plutone, it was not upgraded to a “Type F” version or given a mask to hide its Gundam features. In 2307, Hanayo (aka Gundam Meister 874) ejected the Core Fighter and activated the Gundam Plutone’s self-destruct system after Fon Spaak was injured while fighting Celestial Being’s Trinity siblings.
