Gundam Build Divers Ep. 7: Force Battle

0
Summary

With everyone reaching the required rank, Riku officially registers their force as the Build Divers. Magee congratulates them on creating a force, and Riku thanks him for helping them from the start. Magee comments that they can now experience the best part of GBN: a Force Battle. After school, Riku and Yukki look through a list of Force Battles to pick the best debut for them. Momo asks them about the Force Battle, and Yukki explains that earning Force Points increases their Force Rankings, and winning battles also earns them special items. Riku suggests a 5-on-5 elimination match for beginners with a choice of item as a prize. Riku and Yukki visit Koichi, who is now working at The Gundam Base. They have a week to prepare for the battle, and Riku wants to upgrade the 00 Diver. Koichi recommends using a SEED backpack, and they custom print some upgrade parts. Koichi looks over Momo’s upgrade plans and says it would be easier to help her build something from scratch. He then asks about Sarah’s Gunpla, but she doesn’t have one, and Momo proclaims that she can be the team’s mascot. Koichi notes that they have a problem due to the battle requiring five players. At that moment, Riku spots Ayame walking by and asks her to join their force. She asks why her, and Riku answers that she has more experience and they could learn from her. Ayame mentions that she’s an SD user and agrees to join. She suggests visiting their new Force Nest, a base of operations for each force that can be customized. Over the course of the next week, the Build Divers plan their strategy and work on their Gunpla. By the end, Momo completes the Momokapool, and Koichi the Galbaldy Rebake. At the battle stage, Riku and Yukki are shocked to see Rommel there, while Sarah and Momo pet him uncontrollably. Riku asks if he’s their opponent, and Rommel explains that the Build Divers will be fighting his newest recruits. Magee, Tigerwolf and Shahryar come to watch the battle and cheer on the Build Divers. Kyoya arrives to watch the battle as well, flanked by his lieutenants, Emilia and Karuna. The Build Divers launch in their Gunpla to fight the 7th Military Academy.

Magee tells Rommel that hiding the 7th Panzer Division’s name to join a newbie tournament isn’t honorable, and Rommel answers that experience is the most important thing for newcomers. The 7th Military Academy’s Zakus deploy to a forest and wait for traps to be set off. Two units go after a trap that has been tripped and are instead ambushed by Koichi, Momo and Yukki. Two other Zakus step into a trap and are attacked by Riku’s upgraded 00 Diver Ace. Koichi fires his long-range cannon to hit where he estimates two enemy units will be. The enemy commander is then attacked by Ayame’s ninja-themed RX-Zeromaru. Two Zakus are pushed to the water and pulled under the surface by Momo’s Momokapool. One of the Zakus jumps out of the water and is blasted to pieces by Yukki’s changeling rifle. Momo attacks an Act Zaku and trips on a rock, which allows her to dodge a heat saber attack. She then ejects the Petitkapool for a close-range attack and then returns to the Momokapool, where the fires the belly beam to destroy the Act Zaku. Rommel watches and is shocked at the idea of a one-sided loss for his side. Riku and Ayame take on the three remaining Zakus, but Koichi arrives to even the odds. Riku, Ayame and Koichi charge ahead to attack the Zakus and finish them off. The enemy leader fires a Gatling gun at Riku, but Riku dodges and destroys the gun. He then moves in for the final attack and slices the Zaku apart. Magee cheers for the Build Divers’ victory, while Tigerwolf notes that the new members were good, and Shahryar adds that Riku, Yukki and Momo did good work on their Gunpla. Kyoya is impressed by how far Riku has come, and Rommel is still shocked over the loss. Word quickly spreads through GBN about the battle, and Ogre comments to Do-Ji that Riku wouldn’t stay a novice forever. Rommel shakes hands with Riku and asks for a rematch in the future. Kyoya tells Riku that he’s become strong, and Sarah pets Rommel. Riku tells Sarah to open her hands, and a flower necklace appears as thanks for having saved Riku from Ogre. Emilia tells everyone to gather together for a group picture that Karuna takes and almost misses being in.

Commentary

The Build Divers are established as an official force and take on their first Force Battle, which turns out to be against Rommel’s rookies. Even though Riku and Yukki didn’t perform impressively on their own before now, they developed a strategy and scored a win. Of course, a lot of the credit for this is probably due to Koichi and Ayame being experience players who propped them up. It’s no surprise that Momo has a cute mecha in the form of a penguin-themed Kapool, but it’s interesting to see Koichi create a customized Galbaldy from Zeta Gundam that uses elements from Iron-Blooded Orphans. This episode is definitely an improvement over the two that preceded it.
