Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE Ep. 20: A Wish Entrusted

0
Summary

After participating in the Coalition of Volunteers battle, Hiroto wondered what the Gundam 00 Diver Ace’s wings of light represented, and Eve explained that they were a miracle to save GBN pulled out from everyone’s wishes. Eve says that Hiroto and the other Divers saved GBN, and she comments that even though GBN is an artificial world, she can feel every part of it. She asks Hiroto if he loves GBN too, and he answers that he does. One night, Eve asks Hiroto to erase her, and he wants to know what that means. Eve glitches again, and Hiroto asks where she’s logging in from, which he’s always wondered about. Eve reveals that she doesn’t exist in his world and that she was born in GBN. She says she’s tried to hold it back as much as possible, but bugs are spreading around GBN and threaten to destroy it. Hiroto doesn’t understand, and Eve explains that side effects have been happening ever since the miracle that saved GBN. Purple lightning strikes in the skies above, and Eve states that she’ll soon be consumed by a bug and destroy GBN. Waves of purple energy start emanating from Eve, and she tells Hiroto that she wants to help her little sister. Hiroto responds that he can’t kill Eve, but she says she’ll just return to the sea of data. The weather in the Dimension goes out of control, with the sky cracking open. Eve asks Hiroto to do this to save GBN, but he hesitates. Eve reaches her hand out and makes the Core Gundam aim its core spray gun at her. The ground erupts next to Hiroto, and Eve whispers something to him. The Core Gundam fires at Eve, and the bugs immediately dissipate. Eve asks Hiroto to help anyone like her if he ever comes across them, and she hopes that he’ll still be someone who does his best for others. Hiroto runs toward Eve to grab her, but she breaks apart into pixels and vanishes. Later, Hiroto watches Kyoya announce that the Coalition of Volunteers is being reformed to deal with the threat posed by Sarah, the EL-Diver, who they have in custody. Hiroto realizes that Sarah must be Eve’s little sister.

At the Avalon Force Nest, Vice Captain Karuna asks Hiroto if he’s OK since he seems distracted lately. Hiroto tries to brush it off, but their conversation is interrupted when Riku shouts from nearby that he’s found a way to save Sarah and will come back for her. Karuna tells Hiroto to prepare for a major Force Battle before the update patch is applied to GBN. Later, the original Build Divers launch their attack on Avalon, and Karuna tells Hiroto that he doesn’t have to participate in the battle. Hiroto launches in the Earthree Gundam to provide backup for his comrades, and they come under fire when Force Hyakki attacks to support the Build Divers. Hiroto’s beam rifle is destroyed, so he replaces it with the beam shoot rifle from the Uranus Armor. Vice Captain Emilia sends an emergency message warning everyone to stay out of Kyoya’s fight. Kyoya engages Riku and Ogre in combat, and Riku declares his desire to save Sarah, even though Kyoya says that saving her will destroy GBN. Riku and Ogre defeat Kyoya, and Hiroto targets the 00 Sky as it heads toward the castle. Hiroto struggles with the decision to fire and thinks about Eve. He remembers her last words and pulls the trigger, but aims the rifle at the ground instead. The Force Battle then ends in a victory for the Build Divers. On Eldora, Hiroto finishes telling his story and wonders why he couldn’t save Sarah or fulfill the promise in her last words. Hiroto cries and says that even though Eve was so important to him, he was driven by wild emotion and forgot her final wish. Hiroto thinks he’s the worst for trampling on people’s wishes, and May kisses his tears and hugs him. She tells him to cry as much as he needs to, so he lets it all out. Later, Hiroto apologizes to Freddie and says they’re not the real Build Divers and that he’s worthless, but Freddie doesn’t accept that. He says that to everyone on Eldora, they’re the Build Divers. Freddie thinks that Hiroto kept his promise to Eve because he always fought to help them, and they’re still alive because of him. Freddie thinks that Hiroto was inspired by Eve’s wishes, and Kazami adds that Hiroto has changed all of them. May says that Hiroto’s actions allowed her to be born as an EL-Diver and make the choice to fight for Eldora. Hiroto realizes that everything is connected and that Eve still exists and is close to him everywhere. Parviz asks May about what she just did, and she answers that she doesn’t understand tears, but her guardian said it’s good to make helpful gestures. Hiroto thanks May, and she says she’s glad if it helped him. Elsewhere, villagers flee from the Gundam Seltsam. A young girl tells her brother Thawy to run, but he says that the Gundam Seltsam used to protect them alongside Cuadorn. The Gundam Seltsam deflects incoming weapons fire, and Thawy thinks it was trying to protect him. Several Eldora Army units and an Eldora Daughtress target the Gundam Seltsam. On Earth, Masaki’s vitals change on his hospital monitor.

Commentary

The story of Eve and Hiroto concludes with the expected tragic consequences. Eve fell prey to the same bugs that were affecting Sarah and GBN, so she concluded that the only way to save everything was to sacrifice herself. Hiroto was placed in an impossible situation since he had no way of knowing she was an EL-Diver, and that obviously hung over his head during the second Coalition of Volunteers battle. History, retconned or not, would’ve definitely played out quite differently if Hiroto had sniped Riku. Hiroto has carried this guilt about not saving Eve or following her wishes for a long time, but he’s finally able to let that go thanks to the Build Divers and Freddie. Even though Hiroto has accepted that Eve is everywhere around him because things are connected, I feel like their story isn’t over yet. Since we’re entering the home stretch of the series, we’ll find out one way or the other soon enough.
