WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3 is a theatrical film released in Japan in 2002. It is a midquel to the 1993 film Patlabor 2 the Movie. Directed by Fumihiko Takayama, the movie was written by Miki Tori with mechanical designs by Yutaka Izubuchi, Shoji Kawamori and Hajime Katoki, character designs by Hiroki Takagi and a score by Kenji Kawai. Set in 2000, the story focuses on two Tokyo police detectives investigating attacks by a sea monster, with the SV2 crew relegated to a supporting role. The Japanese theatrical release was paired with a series of shorts called Mobile Police Patlabor Minimum. The movie and shorts were originally released on home video in North America by Pioneer Entertainment, but have since been re-released by Sentai Filmworks’ Maiden Japan label.
