Gundam SEED DESTINY Phase 3: Warning Shots

0
Summary

Shinn dodges the blasts from the Exus‘ gunbarrels, but he’s unable to fire back. Neo presses his attack and pauses momentarily when he senses Rey’s presence. Rey blocks a gunbarrel attack and tells Shinn not to be zoned out or else he’ll just be a sitting target. Neo attacks Rey, and Rey is able to dodge the gunbarrels and destroy one of them. On the Minerva, Talia asks about the status of Shinn and Rey, and she designates the Girty Lue as Bogey-1. Meyrin tells her that they are both fighting a mobile armor and cannot be contacted due to radio interference. Talia orders the bridge to be lowered into battle position before pursuing the Girty Lue. Durandal asks her if she plans to recover the Gundams first, and she tells him she plans to attack the Girty Lue to lure it closer. The Minerva fires its cannons and missiles, and Lee has the Girty Lue fire back with vulcan guns to destroy the Minerva’s incoming missiles. Shinn pulls out his beam saber to attack Neo, and Rey destroys another one of Neo’s gunbarrels. Neo decides it’s best to not be too greedy and retreats back to the Girty Lue. The Minerva fires its cannons at the Girty Lue’s engines and misses. Neo docks inside the Girty Lue and orders Lee to retreat. He heads for the bridge and tells Lee to detach the ship’s two propellant tanks and detonate them. Shinn and Rey return to the Minerva, and Vino and Yolant ask Shinn if he’s okay. The Girty Lue detaches its propellant tanks, and Talia has the Minerva cease fire and change course. The tanks detonate in front of the Minerva, but the ship is undamaged. The Girty Lue escapes, and Talia tells Durandal she won’t have a chance to drop him off anywhere. He’s okay with that and says that their priority should be to either reclaim or destroy the Gundams. The Minerva then starts up its engines to pursue the Girty Lue. The bridge returns to normal operations, and Talia asks Rey to escort Durandal to a cabin. Lunamaria calls Talia to give her report about an incident earlier. She explains that two civilians boarded the ship on a ZAKU Warrior and claim to be Cagalli and her bodyguard Alex. Lunamaria says that they requested medical attention and an audience with Durandal, so she had them treated and taken to a cabin. Durandal wonders how Cagalli got on the ship.

On the Girty Lue, Lee asks Neo if he thinks the Minerva will pursue them. Neo says he doesn’t know, but he will proceed on the assumption that they will. Lee asks about the status of the pilots, who are all resting in regeneration chambers. Neo tells him the only problem is that Auel used Stella’s block word on her. Lee doubts the effectiveness of using such people on the battlefield, but Neo counters that unlike the last bunch these at least can follow orders. In the Minerva’s mobile suit hangar, Vino whines about the attack and hope it doesn’t lead to another war. In another room, Durandal apologizes to Cagalli for the situation she’s in. Cagalli asks him if he knows anything about the attackers, and he says they have no information. Durandal then says they have to stay on top of the problem to prevent the situation from getting worse. He then asks Cagalli and Athrun if they want to take a tour of the ship with him. Talia asks if that’s a good idea, and he tells her it’s a gesture of good faith between friends. In the mobile suit hangar, Lunamaria tells Shinn about Cagalli and “Alex,” and she believes that “Alex” is Athrun Zala. Durandal and Rey escort Athrun and Cagalli to the mobile suit hangar, which holds several ZAKU types, a GuAIZ R and the Impulse Gundam. Cagalli asks Durandal if he’s enjoying the situation and quotes his previous statement about power always being necessary. She asks why new mobile suits were even necessary when both sides promised to move towards piece. From nearby, Shinn yells out that the Athha family is skilled at sugarcoating things. The Girty Lue is picked up on sensors, and Talia orders battle stations. Rey apologizes for Shinn’s outburst and promises to deal with him later. As the Girty Lue approaches an asteroid, Neo orders battle stations. Durandal brings Athrun and Cagalli to the bridge and explains to Talia that he wants a war veteran like Cagalli to watch the battle. The Girty Lue launches its Dagger L units and fires an anchor to pull itself up into a cavity within the asteroid. On the Minerva, Lunamaria launches in her Gunner ZAKU Warrior, followed by Shinn in the Core Splendor. After launching, Shinn docks with the Chest Flyer, Leg Flyer, and Blast Silhouette Flyer. Durandal wonders what the real name of Bogey-1 is. He says that a name determines the existence of something, and if something has a fake name it doesn’t exist. He then reveals to the entire bridge crew that “Alex” is Athrun Zala.

Commentary

So ends another action-packed episode. Shinn doesn’t fight so well against Neo’s gunbarrels, but Rey performs quite well and destroys two of them. With the Girty Lue on the run, the Gundam pilots don’t get to see any action this time. It’s revealed that they need to rest in regenerative chambers, and Neo comments that they perform better than the last group. He’s probably referring to the biological CPU pilots from SEED, which would make Auel, Sting and Stella test subjects as well. There’s some tension on the Minerva when Shinn displays some serious anger towards Cagalli and her family. Since her father was the leader of Orb, he probably blames him for the battle that led to his family’s massacre. Athrun’s short-lived alias is blown by Durandal, and I wonder why he chose to do it so publicly in front of the bridge crew.
