Gundam SEED DESTINY Phase 49: Rey

0
Summary

Shinn and Rey launch in their Gundams and head for Messiah. The Archangel and Eternal enter orbit around the Moon and approach ZAFT’s lunar fleet. Neo and Murrue discuss the plan, in which the two fastest ships will destroy the first relay station while the Orb fleet attacks Requiem directly. Durandal orders the Minerva, Gondwana and half of the lunar fleet to mobilize and deal with the Archangel and Eternal, while the rest of the fleet protects Daedalus. On the Eternal, Kira launches in the Strike Freedom, followed by Athrun in the Infinite Justice. As they dock with their METEORs, Lacus broadcasts a message to ZAFT saying that they will destroy Requiem because it is unnecessary. She tells the soldiers that if they have any pride they should stand aside. Shinn and Rey arrive at Messiah and are greeted by Durandal. Kira and Athrun fly by the confused ZAFT pilots, and a commander orders them to attack, saying that the Three Ships Alliance is a remnant of Logos. Yzak is annoyed, and Dearka tells him that the Archangel couldn’t contact them because they’re in ZAFT. Yzak orders the Voltaire‘s launch, and the Minerva moves to intercept the Archangel. Durandal asks Shinn if something is wrong and wonders if he’s become confused again by events. He says that even though they don’t want to fight, the Three Ships Alliance is attacking them. In space, Athrun and Kira use their METEORs to disable mobile suits and destroy battleships. Rey says they can’t give up because if they do, the bloody history of mankind will continue and give rise to another Logos. Durandal asks Shinn to use his power to bring an end to the world of fighting. Shinn thinks about what Rey revealed about his past. Rey said that he was created solely to give rise to the Ultimate Coordinator, Kira. He says that his body is aging faster than normal, and that Rau cursed his fate and died trying to destroy everything. Rey says that before dying, he wants to create a new world so that there won’t be more children like him. Durandal asks Shinn what he thinks, and Shinn says he agrees with Rey.

The Archangel receives damage from incoming attacks and returns fire. Neo launches in the Akatsuki Gundam, followed by several Murasames. On the Eternal, Hilda, Mars and Herbert launch in their DOM Troopers and engage ZAFT suits. As the Minerva enters the combat area, Talia thinks about her conversation with Murrue and reflects on how they feel the same way about fighting. She orders Lunamaria to launch in the Impulse Gundam and says they will finally destroy the Archangel for ZAFT’s pride. Dearka jokingly asks Yzak if they should launch and get themselves killed, and Yzak says he’s going to go out as well. Neo uses his DRAGOONs to destroy several ZAKU Warriors, and Yzak launches from the Voltaire in his GOUF Ignited, followed by Dearka in his Blaze ZAKU Phantom. Dearka asks Yzak what they’re going to do, and Yzak says he wants to punch Athrun for shamelessly entering the battlefield again. As Messiah heads for the Moon, Durandal tells Rey that even if the relay station is destroyed, they have spares. Lunamaria prepares to attack the Eternal, but Meyrin calls her and asks her why she’s still fighting. Hilda, Mars and Herbert perform the Jet Stream Attack on Lunamaria, but she manages to survive. The Minerva charges its Tannhauser, and Murrue realizes that if the Archangel moves, the Eternal will be hit. The Minerva fires the Tannhauser, and Neo blocks the shot with the Akatsuki Gundam. He suddenly has a flash or recognition and regains his memories as Mu, as well as recalling being covered in bandages with Djibril watching over him. Neo then destroys the Tannhauser with his beam rifle and uses his DRAGOONs to create an energy shield around the Archangel. Yzak destroys several missiles that are about to hit Athrun. Together, Kira, Athrun, Yzak and Dearka fire at the relay station and destroy it. Shinn listens to Maya’s voicemail, and Rey gives him an update on the battle. He tells Shinn that Lunamaria is safe and that he should believe in her more because she’s strong. He says that the Orb fleet will attack Requiem to display their power. As he leaves, he says that in the end Shinn will save Orb. The Kusanagi and the two Izumo class ships fire their Lohengrins directly at Requiem, but a beam shield deflects their shots. Messiah then appears over the horizon and fires Neo GENESIS, destroying several of the Alliance ships. Rey then launches in the Legend Gundam, followed by Shinn in the Destiny Gundam. Kira and Athrun undock from their METEORs and are attacked by Rey and Shinn. As Rey fights Kira, he says that Kira’s existence is the one thing he can’t forgive.

Commentary

The series continues to sputter along to what I guess will eventually be called an “ending.” Shinn gets about maybe 5 minutes of screen time here, which consists mostly of more confusion and assurance by Durandal and Rey. The rest of the episode consists of lots of stock footage and METEOR smashing fun. Oh look, someone fires a positron cannon at the Archangel. Thank goodness Neo is there to save the day again, with the exact same footage no less! Let’s not forget Neo GENESIS, yet another superweapon to appear in this series. There’s so much stock footage here that you could hardly even call it a battle. On the character side, Rey says some surprisingly sincere things to Shinn after being crabby for so long. It’s also funny to see Yzak and Dearka switch sides at the drop of a hat. I guess that’s a habit they picked up from Athrun. All in all, this so-called epic final battle is really just a rehash of the end of SEED. The only difference here is that it was all more interesting the first time around.
