Episode 5: Blue and Red

Half a year ago, Leo tells two boxes named GBR-2 and GBR-3 good morning. After a moment, they reply with the same greeting. The team celebrates the 'birthday' of the two AIs, and snapshots are shown of the
team members teaching GBR-2 and GBR-3 various things. They are named EnRyu and HyoRyu, and placed in large rescue vehicles. However, they don't have the energy to perform their system change. In the present day, Pasdar admits that he never expected something so powerful to be on Earth. Primarda says that it's her turn to perform. Mamoru's class is on another field trip, and his friends bother him about his pager. Leo informs Kazuo that the GS-Ride energy for EnRyu and HyoRyu has always been too low, and they cannot determine why. HyoRyu and EnRyu each apologize for not being able to gather enough energy. Kazuo suggests that it's due to their GS-Ride systems being an Earth copy of the original. A truck driver gets stuck in a traffic jam, and tries to find an alternate route. He punches his navigation screen, which gives him a route that leads to a dead end. Primarda appears before the driver, proclaiming herself a dancer of love. She asks him if he hates traffic, and turns him into a Zonder. The bus continues on its way, Mamoru and his friends playing a Pocket Monsters-esque video game with each other. Mamoru senses a Zonder, but ignores it while he's playing the game. Mikoto and Swan discuss the traffic jam, and Swan begins making comparisons between Japan and America. They notice an accident on the highway, but think nothing of it since Mamoru hasn't alerted them. A sleeping Entouji ruffles his hair, and the two freak out from the flying dandruff. On the highway, people get out of their cars and run from EI-06, who's become a four-lane steamroller. Primarda laughs at how beautiful it is as EI-06 flattens every car in its way. Hana sees Mamoru's hair change while he's playing the game, but Mamoru says it's because he might've hit his head in his sleep. Their teacher sees EI-06 coming right for them, and Mamoru realizes what the feeling was he shrugged aside.

Leo tells Taiga that the Zonder grows with every car it runs over, and Taiga says it's the consequences for not finding it sooner. Hyuuma says calling Mamoru right now is useless, since he wouldn't be of any use. The students empty out of the bus, and Hana sees Mamoru's flashing pager. EI-06 gets too heavy for the ramp they're on, causing the entire stretch of highway to collapse. Hana, the only one left in the bus, nearly falls off the torn ramp as the bus lingers on the edge. Guy dashes onto the scene, announcing that he'll need Dividing Driver for this problem. Kazuo tells him it won't be ready for two hours, and Mikoto suggests they send out EnRyu and HyoRyu. Even without their system change, they can still help with rescue work. The two move out toward the emergency, and EI-06 approaches Mamoru's class. GaiGar lands in front of them, and attempts to hold back EI-06. It creates a front-end loader, grabbing GaiGar and attempting to crush him. Primarda tells him to crush him, so that he cannot form the black robot. The bus Hana's in teeters off the edge, but is saved by HyoRyu's crane. Hyuuma comes in on EnRyu, and they begin getting everyone from the battle. GaiGar continues to try and hold off EI-06, and HyoRyu and EnRyu come into help. EI-06 creates a barrier, holding them back. Taiga tells them to use system change, but no one can figure out why they don't have the power to accomplish it. Mamoru curses the Zonder in rage, and GaiGar, EnRyu, and HyoRyu's power maxes out. HyoRyu and EnRyu use System Change, turning into their humanoid forms. HyoRyu uses his Freezing Gun to stop EI-06's advance, and EnRyu begins to pelt it in the face with his Melting Gun. They rush in to hold off EI-06, allowing Guy to perform Final Fusion. GaoGaiGar wastes no time to perform Hell and Heaven, even as EI-06 attempts to force him back. Once the core is removed, EnRyu and HyoRyu activate their thrusters and shove its body into the ocean to explode harmlessly. Primarda stands on Tokyo Tower, enraged that two more robots have appeared. Mamoru heals the core, and apologizes to Guy for not calling them. Guy says that everyone makes mistakes, and they never expect one person to carry the team. HyoRyu and EnRyu greet Mamoru, and Leo wonders if it was Mamoru that raised the output of EnRyu and HyoRyu. The truck driver happily sits in a traffic jam, saying there's no rush.

Not only does Primarda make her first appearance as antagonist in this episode, but the two robots from the flashback show up as well. EnRyu and HyoRyu are even more like Transformers than anything thus far; they have a vehicle mode, and the mundane parts to the vehicle become their weapons in human form. Not only that, but they too have mouths and noses and the like, to better personify them. I don't think this is necessarily bad, however. While they seem to lean toward the personalities you would expect from fire and ice, EnRyu and HyoRyu are definitely likeable and add to the dynamics of the team. I enjoy seeing multiple robots attempting to overcome something with their abilities than just GaoGaiGar, since his special attacks are definitely lacking. Speaking of GaoGaiGar itself, Primarda has already caught on to the secret behind the 'black robot', and knows that if they get rid of GaiGar, GaoGaiGar is gone as well. Perhaps now we'll see the Machine Kings try to make Zonders to focus on that, as well as attacking civilians.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
