Summary

Following Zero Requiem, Gino, Kallen, Rivalz, Milly and Nina return to Ashford Academy to see the rebuilt school. Gino is surprised that everything looks the same, so Milly explains that her grandfather rebuilt it that way because he didn't want anything to look different. Rivalz thinks that it should look the same, or otherwise it isn't their school. Kallen mentions that a temporary building was constructed for the workers, but Rivalz laments that the building was built over the basketball court. Milly notes that Kallen isn't pretending to be frail anymore, but Gino doesn't understand. Nina tells him that a girl has to have her secrets, and Rivalz mentions that she's changed a lot. Kallen notes that none of the guys have changed and Gino wonders if that's true. Kallen mentions his email from the other day and says he should stop acting like a nobleman, but Gino counters that he's just acting like a guy. Viletta watches from nearby and tells Sayoko that she feels nostalgic. Sayoko asks her how she feels being so highly ranked and Viletta answers that she preferred being a teacher to First Lady. Sayoko mentions that they're standing in the room where Viletta pledged her love to Ohgi. Viletta is surprised as to how Sayoko knows that, so Sayoko reminds Viletta that she's from the Shinozaki ninja clan. Kallen and Gino both want to know who's better in a Knightmare, but Milly breaks them up and says it's an order from the president. Rivalz notes that he's actually the council president now, which Kallen says is by process of elimination. Empress Nunnally arrives with Suzaku (dressed as Zero) as her escort and says that Rivalz's council is probably fun. Everyone is happy to see Nunnally, but Gino is surprised that they know each other. Nunnally explains that Sir Orange cancelled out Geass and restored their memories. She says the school feels the same, but some things can never go back to how they were. Everyone is surprised when Jeremiah and Anya set off fireworks as per Lelouch's orders. Jeremiah asks Anya if she wouldn't rather be with the order students, but she answers that her memories are inside her. Rivalz wonders who is setting off the fireworks, and Milly mentions that it's just like Lelouch promised. Milly wonders if Shirley and Rolo are watching from somewhere and Rivalz thinks that they are. Suzaku wonders if Lelouch is also watching from somewhere. Lelouch had promised to watch the fireworks with them, but that proved to be another lie. Suzaku sees that Nunnally is smiling because this is the future that Lelouch gave to them.

Commentary

The final R2 picture drama serves as an epilogue to the series, and it's a bittersweet ending. Everyone has gathered to see the rebuilt Ashford Academy, but it's immediately apparent that things aren't the same without people like Lelouch and Shirley. Ending with fireworks couldn't have been more fitting since it was a promise that Lelouch made during the series. Even though he's not around to see them, he made sure that they happened for everyone else to see.
