Episode 6: The Forgotten Past

Review by Chris Guanche

June 3, 2002

Summary

Guin rides through Nocis in a car with Dianna and her advisor Miran Rex. Dianna and Miran comment on how impressive the Turn A is, and Guin explains it is only experimental. As Loran heads for Nocis, he spots Militia trucks disguised as civilian ones. He stops at a train station and flags down a train carrying Sochie and Miashei's Kapools. He asks them if they plan to attack with only two suits, and Sochie explains that more are on the way. Loran thinks this is a bad idea, and Sochie tells him to shut up and follow orders. As Harry patrols Nocis in his SUMO, citizens and Militia soldiers protest the presence of the Moonrace and begin attacking. Harry begins to scan the area for Dianna while the other SUMOs of the Royal Guard fight off the Militia. Guin has his driver hurry towards Bostonia Castle, but the path is blocked by Militia trucks. Pulling into an alley, Guin decides they will have to walk. Miran objects, but Dianna agrees with Guin that they will die if they stay where they are. As the SUMOs continue to fight the Militia, Harry searches for Dianna. He spots the Turn A approaching him and pulls out his heat fan. Loran prepares to fight without weapons, but Guin shows up and tells them not to fight. Loran sees that Dianna is with Guin and accidentally trips and falls on the SUMO. He then carries Guin in his hand while Harry carries Dianna in the SUMO's hand. As a show of good faith, Guin orders all Militia soldiers to pull 20km out of Nocis. At Bostonia Castle, Guin and Michael explain that a small faction of the Militia attacked and they promise to investigate. Dianna is tired, so Kihel escorts her and Miran to their rooms. Sochie asks Loran to let her borrow the Turn A, but he leaves to visit Keith. Sid arrives on a train and tells Sochie and Miashei he needs their help. Loran asks Keith what Fran is doing and is given some bread. Keith explains that he is running the Donkey Bakery now because his boss injured himself and is in the hospital. He says that alone he can't make enough money to support the boss' family and pay the hospital bills. Loran tells him not to worry because everything will be all right now that Dianna has arrived.

Loran rides on a motorcycle and bribes some guards with bread to let him enter the park in front of Bostonia Castle. He meets with Fran and asks how things are going. He tells her to write a positive story about Dianna, and she tells him he has no talent for the news. He says he has no talent at all and will leave stopping wars in the hands of Dianna. Inside the castle, Miran unveils a map of North Ameria and shows that the Sunbelt zone of the Midwest has fertile land and is not densely populated. Guin says people don't live there because of the hot sun, and Dianna says their history should show that this isn't their land. One of Guin's dukes objects and says his ancestors made Earth live again while Dianna's ran away to the Moon. Elsewhere, Loran sees Pou and Phil's Wodom and some Wads patrolling the forest. Pou doesn't like Dianna's orders, and Phil says that's to be expected since she isn't a soldier. He says that their job as soldiers is to fill in for her weakness. Militia soldiers roast a pig at a banquet and cheer when they see the Turn A leaving. Elsewhere, the Kapools unload artifacts found by Sid in the mountains. An enemy is detected, and Sochie and Miashei scramble to fight. They ask Sid about their rocket launchers, and he tells them they haven't been tested yet. Loran doesn't think Sochie and Miashei are a match for a Wodom, so he searches the manual for more weapons. He discovers an underground weapons facility, and the Turn A automatically runs to a nearby town square. Large stone pillars surrounding the square react to the Turn A, and an elevator lowers the suit underground. Loran finds a hidden cache of beam rifles, but they crumble apart when he grabs them. The only weapon that seems to be in good condition is a Gundam hammer, which he grabs. As Sochie and Miashei fare pitifully against the Wodom, Loran shows up and attacks with his Gundam hammer. Pou fires missiles at Loran, but he spins the hammer quickly and uses it as a shield to block the missiles. He then throws the thruster-equipped hammer at the Wodom and smashes it into it's head. The Gundam hammer crumbles, and Pou and Phil retreat. Loran prays that Dianna will not start a war on the beautiful Earth.

Commentary

This episode seems to pick up immediately where the last one left off. Guin's plan to kidnap Dianna is executed, but it doesn't seem to work. Also, Miran is suspicious of Guin and seems to have the right idea about what Guin is doing. Small faction of the Militia, indeed. Loran and Harry have a confrontation here, but it ends without a battle and Loran embarrassing himself. The Kapools get to fight here, and we see how inexperienced Sochie and Miashei are. Sochie wants to avenge her father, but it's making her pilot her suit recklessly, which is not a good thing. In another connection to the Universal Century, Loran finds a Gundam hammer, which is very similar to the one used by the original Gundam in the first series. Too bad it and all the other rifles crumbled away. The underground cache of weapons raises some interesting questions: who put it there, and are there more like it elsewhere? We'll have to see.
