Episode 11: Entering the Atmosphere

Scirocco boards a Federation Forces ship and meets with the captain. He tells the captain that he should move his fleet to Earth if he wants to stop the AEUG. The captain doesn't agree and says he will contact Bask for instructions. Aboard the Argama, Kamille and Astoniage work on the Mk II while Fa delivers lunch. Henken shows up with Bright to let everyone know that Bright is the new captain of the ship. Bright tells Kamille and Char that he'll be counting on them for the next mission. On the Alexandria, Jerid and Kacricon plan to get even with Kamille for what happened on the Moon. Bright takes command of the ship, and Henken prepares to leave for the Moon. On his way out he tells Emma that he wants her to lead the attack on Jaburo. Emma sees that Fa is lost, and she asks Fa if she had an argument with Kamille. Emma explains that Kamille is under a lot of pressure and looking for comfort. Scirocco tells the Federation captain that he shouldn't send out any mobile suits during the attack. He believes that the Messala he invented at Jupiter should be enough. The AEUG fleet begins heading for Earth. Jerid and Kacricon test the ballute systems on their Marasais for atmospheric re-entry. On the Argama, Kamille and Astoniage finish working on the Mk II's Flying Armor. Bright tells Char that Mirai and his kids are living at Jaburo, and he wants Char to find them and take them to safety. Fa visits Kamille and gives her condolences about his parents. He says he's sorry that Bask has her parents, but he can't do anything about it. Fa says she is trying to comfort him, and he tells her to leave him alone.

As the AEUG fleet approaches Earth, Bright sends out the mobile suits. Char launches in the Hyaku Shiki, followed by Emma's Rick Dias and Kamille's Mk II. Soon after launching, Scirocco attacks with the Messala and destroys an AEUG ship. Emma breaks formation to fight Scirocco, and Char tells Kamille to fight instead of her because he has more maneuverability. Kamille arrives to aid her, and Scirocco cuts off the Rick Dias' left arm. The Messala then transforms into a massive mobile suit that dwarfs the Mk II and the Rick Dias. Char comes to help and tells Emma to return to the ship. She instead returns to the front lines. Char and Kamille continue to fend off Scirocco's attacks. As they approach the atmosphere, Scirocco leaves the battle because he doesn't want to be pulled in by the Earth's gravity. Jerid and Kacricon arrive with their squad of mobile suits and begin attacking. Bright gives Emma a direct order to return to the ship, and she does. Char opens his ballute and is taken out of the battle. Kamille continues to fight Jerid and Kacricon alone. Jerid thinks they are getting too close to the atmosphere, and he opens his ballute, leaving Kacricon to fight Kamille. Kacricon's ballute then opens automatically, leaving him defenseless. Kamille destroys the ballute, and Kacricon's Marasai burns up in the atmosphere. Jerid swears he will avenge Kacricon as the suits approach Jaburo.

This is without a doubt the most action packed episode so far in the series. The last half of this episode is one incredible battle in the atmosphere. It's a bit reminiscent of the battle between Char and Amuro in the original series, but this battle is a lot bigger. We also get a formal introduction to Paptimus Scirocco, who creates powerful mobile suits and is a Newtype. That's a deadly combination. Speaking of death, the demise of Kacricon completely caught me by surprise in this episode. Usually, you can tell from the beginning of an episode if a character is going to die, but that isn't the case here. Kamille's parents, Lila, and Kacricon are all killed by surprise. That surprise just makes their deaths work more. On a strange note, when Torres searches the mobile armor database, if you look closely, you can see the hideous Zakrello from the original series.
