Episode 14: Amuro Flies Again

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Unbeknownst to the Federation, the Republic of Zeon at Side 3 forms an alliance with the Titans. In the United States, Titans officer Rosamia Badam launches in her transforming Gaplant, along with a squadron of Act Zakus to pursue the Audhumla. Char and Hayato assume that the Sudori will attack at any time, and Char tells Kamille to prepare for battle. Elsewhere, Amuro takes Fraw and the children to the airport so they can depart for Japan. Katz is still angry that Amuro isn't doing anything. Amuro spots a cargo plane and asks Fraw if he can borrow Katz. Amuro and Katz go into the bathroom to ditch the man who is watching Amuro. They then sneak out of the bathroom and hijack the cargo plane. Amuro wants to go to the Kennedy Spaceport and join with Hayato and the AEUG. High in the sky, Rosamia's squad spots the Audhumla and attacks. She tells the Act Zakus to concentrate on shooting the Audhumla down, not attacking mobile suits. Hayato and Char are worried about fighting over a civilian area. Char heads out in the Hyaku-Shiki and tells Kamille to cover him from the inside. Char attacks Rosamia, but she ignores him and shoots at the Audhumla, causing minor damage. Kamille doesn't want to go down without fighting, so he disobeys Char's orders and launches with a Dodai Kai. After launching, the Mk II is immediately attacked by Rosamia.

Kamille manages to grapple onto the Gaplant and is about to destroy it when it transforms into a mobile suit. Rosamia throws Kamille off of her and shoots at him. Char flies by and damages her, forcing her to retreat. Back on the Audhumla, Kamille tells Hayato that he disobeyed orders and attacked because he sensed danger from the Gaplant. Char says it was the same feeling as when they encountered the Messala. Elsewhere, Rosamia docks with the Sudori, and Buran tells her to improve for the next operation. He wonders if Rosamia is a successful Cyber Newtype before taking off in his Asshimar. Kamille and the others relax momentarily until Buran's squad attacks them. Kamille and Char head out to defend the ship and fight Buran by shooting pellets at him. Kamille uses a bazooka, but Buran manages to avoid his shots. Nearby, Amuro and Katz spot the Audhumla and the battle. Amuro tells Katz to escape with the homoavis glider while he prepares to slam the plane into the Asshimar. Kamille spots the plane nearby, and both Amuro and Char sense each other. Amuro slams the plane into Buran's Asshimar, causing the plane to break in half. Amuro parachutes to safety, but Buran manages to escape as well. Kamille catches Amuro in the Mk II's hand. He gets out of the Mk II and asks Amuro if he is okay. Char approaches and gets out of the Hyaku-Shiki, and both he and Amuro instantly recognize each other.

Commentary

This is the moment the fans have been waiting for: Amuro and Char meet again after seven years. It was good to see Amuro in action in this episode. It seems he's decided to give up being a coward and is taking action. However, slamming a plane into a mobile suit might not be the best way to get back into the game. It was actually kind of odd for Amuro to do that, because that sort of move is characteristic of the Gundam Wing pilots. A new character is also introduced in this episode, and Rosamia seems to be a good enough pilot to get Char worried. According to Buran, she is also a "Cyber Newtype," but that's not really explained much. What I want to see is how Char and Amuro will react when they get close to each other.
