Episode 18: Mirai Captured

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Four leaves the Sudori against Namicar's orders and is told she will never regain her memories. Four wants to see if she can find the pilot of the Mk II. Elsewhere, Amuro and Mirai talk on the Coral Oriental, and Amuro offers to let her stay on the Audhumla. Cheimin plays with Hathaway's toy glider and loses it. Nearby, Four picks it up and begins playing with it. Kamille pulls up in his car and starts watching her. Four gives the glider to Cheimin and watches Amuro closely as he and Beltorchika leave the ship. Then, she approaches Kamille and asks him for a ride. He agrees, and they go for a ride and begin talking. They discuss names, and it seems they both like the other person's name but hate their own. Kamille mentions yet again how he hates his own name, and Four says it's a gentle name. She starts to ask him about Amuro, and he wonders why. He asks if she's an Amuro fan, and she says no and starts snuggling up against him. Back on the Coral Oriental, several men come into Mirai's room and take her and her children hostage. Ben makes a radio broadcast and says he will begin randomly attacking Hong Kong unless the AEUG hands over the Audhumla. He also says he has Mirai and her children as hostages, and he will not guarantee their safety. Kamille tells Four he's from the AEUG and drops her off. Beltorchika calls Hayato and tells him that Amuro took off in a boat and headed for the bay. Stephanie tells Hayato not to forget the AEUG's objectives and asks him not to drag the Luio Company into the mess.

Amuro heads out to the boat and offers himself as a hostage to set Mirai free. He asks why Ben wants the Audhumla, and Ben says he is following orders. Amuro says the Federation is destroying the Earth, and Ben punches them. He then agrees to the hostage exchange and lets Mirai and the kids leave on Amuro's boat. However, as soon as she begins to pull away, a hidden Marine Hizack grabs her boat. Ben announces on the radio that the city's plan to let the Audhumla escape at night is unacceptable. Kamille signals a Nemo and drives off the road, where the Nemo catches him and takes him back to the Audhumla. He finds Stephanie and Hayato discussing what to do. Kamille prepares to fight, and Hayato says he has a plan. The Audhumla floats across the water with a white surrender flag while Kamille approaches the boat underwater. Four tries to steal a car, but she is suddenly hit by an intense headache. Kamille hits a rock and reveals himself to the Marine Hizacks. An underwater battle begins, and the two boats are knocked around. Hathaway falls into the water, and Amuro jumps into Mirai's boat. She cuts the ropes around his hands, and he jumps into the water to rescue Hathaway. Kamille forces the Marine Hizacks out of the water and destroys them all with his bazooka. After the battle, Beltorchika yells at Mirai, saying that her presence is causing Amuro to become careless. Mirai says that Amuro isn't careless, and Beltorchika breaks down in tears. Kamille lands nearby and destroys a dock. Cheimin and Amuro thank him for helping out.

Commentary

Well, this episode was a bit better than the last. Finally, Four and Kamille meet. Their relationship so far seems to be quite strange. I didn't know that within the world of Gundam one could be an "Amuro fan." Also, it seems Beltorchika is even more possessive of Amuro in this episode. To imagine that a minor character like her would yell at someone like Mirai, it's preposterous. Looking back, I guess that Kamille's underwater battle here was inspiration for a similar one in Gundam X. It seems that both Kamille and Garrod Ran aren't suited to fight in the water.
