Episode 5: Father and Son

Summary

On the Alexandria, Bask and Jamaican review the combat data of the Rick Dias suits. He orders Jamaican to locate the secret base of the AEUG while he returns to Gryps. On the Argama, two of the Mk IIs are slowly dismantled, while the other is painted white. Franklin harrasses the workers about their techniques and takes Astoniage hostage with a laser torch. He says he wants to see the Rick Dias, but Astoniage says he wants to steal it. Franklin says Bask will owe him for bringing back a Rick Dias. He knocks Astoniage aside and heads for the Alexandria. Char orders Apolly and Roberto to pursue until he catches up. Char takes the Mk II because he believes that Kamille won't shoot his own father. Henken tells Blex that at A Baoa Qu he felt the power of the Red Comet, and he believes that "Quattro" is actually Char. Kamille struggles with Reccoa and tells her she doesn't understand his position. Bask prepares to transfer from the Alexandria to the Brunei. Char quickly catches up to Apolly and Roberto with the Mk II, and they attack Franklin. On the Alexandria, the mobile suits are detected on radar, and Jerid launches with a Hizack squad to intercept the enemy (so he can restore his honor). The Alexandria fires their cannons and destroy the leg of Char's Mk II. Henken has the Argama fire its mega particle gun to cover Char and the others.

Back on the Argama, Kamille tricks Astoniage and takes out one of the Mk IIs that is being disassembled and missing a left arm. Astoniage wants to stop Kamille, but Reccoa convinces him to open the hatch. As the battle continues, Bask's shuttle loses control while transferring between ships. Kamille locates Franklin and lets out all his anger about his father's affair. He aims his rifle, and Franklin asks how he could dare to do such a thing. He says he has done his parental duty to Kamille, and he begins firing. Somebody else shoots the Rick Dias in the torso, and Kamille's father abandons it. The suit explodes, and he is killed in the blast. Kamille can't believe it, and he receives a fuzzy message from Char about not hesitating. Nearby, Jerid searches for Kamille in the chaos of the battle but cannot find him. Kamille shoots randomly at any target, and Char takes him back to the Argama. Later, Kamille meets with Char, Reccoa and Emma. Char still believes Emma is a spy because the Titans could be using her parents as hostages. Char tells Kamille the story about Char Aznable, and Kamille says he respected Char's ideas, but not the stupidity of fighting alone. Char tells Kamille that "Char's" situation was the same as his, and Kamille becomes enraged, saying he doesn't care about the Titans or the AEUG. He runs to his room and cries.

Commentary

Darkness just seems to pour out of this show. Fathers and sons often clash because of some differences, but never like this. Kamille's father was quite the treacherous man, as he didn't care much about his wife or son. All he seemed preoccupied with was his mistress and the design for his next mobile suit. Well, as he discovered, the battlefiled is quite harsh. Though the shooter is never seen on screen, I'm pretty sure it was Char who shot him. Then there's the part where Char tells the thinly disguised story about his own life, hoping to get Kamille to join the AEUG. It seems to backfire, and Kamille calls Char stupid without even suspecting who "Quattro" really is. I wonder how much longer Char will be able to talk about himself before he gives his identity away.
