Episode 24: Fraternal Love in the South Seas

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Haman's fleet lands near Dakar and occupies the city with Zakus, Zssas and Galluss-Js. Nearby, the Argama enters Earth's atmosphere and detaches its ballute. After landing in the ocean, the Gundam Team is retrieved. Bright examines a map and sees that they have landed too far south of Dakar. He receives a message from Karaba saying that Haman's forces have already landed in Dakar and taken control of the city. In the water, a Capule surfaces and begins firing missiles at the Argama. Roux gets into the Zeta Gundam, and Judau nearly falls to his death before Iino reminds him that there is gravity on Earth. Bright tells Judau that the ZZ Gundam will stay behind for the moment because the enemy is suspicious. Roux attacks the Capules, and it fires missiles before escaping underwater. Later, a boat signals the Argama that it wants to be their guide. Bright figures the locals know the geography better, so he agrees to their price. Judau goes down to visit Ple and then jumps onto the boat. On the boat, a boy named Taman takes the money from Beecha and Mondo and leaves with Judau. He tells Judau that he hates war and that in Africa there's constantly been fighting between the Zeon, the Federation and the Titans. Taman takes Judau to his house and introduces him to his sister Anna, who is about the same age as Leina. Elle notices that Judau is gone and goes to see if he is with Ple. Ple says she can sense he has left the ship, so Elle takes her down to the mobile suit hangar to provide directions. Ple steals a Neo Core Fighter and is followed by Elle and Iino in the Core Top and Core Base. A man tells Taman that there is a good job for him, so he leaves Judau with Anna. Anna says that many mobile suits have appeared recently and that Taman is piloting them. She is afraid he will kill people and get involved in the war.

In the heavy rain, Elle and Iino decide to split up in their search for Judau and Ple. Anna leads Judau to the cave where Neo Zeon soldiers are hiding the Capule and several Zaku Mariners. The Neo Zeon pilots instruct Taman and other locals that they will pilot the mobile suits and attack the Argama. Judau stops Taman and asks him how he could do this after taking the Argama's money. Taman says he has no choice and knocks out Judau before getting into the Capule. The civilians and the Neo Zeon pilots get into the Zaku Mariners and begin heading for the Argama. Judau thinks Leina is standing over him as he wakes up, but it's really Anna. He says that he has to go after Taman and asks to borrow her boat. She says he can't because he doesn't know the area, but he doesn't mind risking it. Ple flies into the cave with the Neo Core Fighter and lands. Judau asks why she came, and she says because he called her. He gets into the Neo Core Fighter and promises Anna that he will bring Taman back. As he flies through the sky he encounters Elle and Iino. He docks with their components to form the G-Fortress and dives into the water. Elle and Iino try to contact the Argama about the attack, but the Minovsky interference is too high. The Zaku Mariners begin firing their SUBROCs (submarine rockets) at the Argama, and the Argama quickly takes off. Judau attacks the Zaku Mariners and transforms to ZZ Gundam. One of the civilians tries to escape and is destroyed by a Neo Zeon pilot. Judau destroys all of the others and tells Taman to stop. As he cries, he tells Taman that he should know war is painful and that he shouldn't let people use him for money. Taman realizes that he was the one being used and speeds back to his island. He jumps out of his Capule and lets it slam into the other Zaku Mariners and destroy them. Afterwards, he swims back to the beach to return to his sister.

Commentary

This was an interesting episode. We get to see the regular citizens of Africa, which never happened when Kamille and Char briefly visited the continent in Zeta Gundam. We also get the story of Taman and Anna, which isn't so different from the situation of Judau and Leina. However, Taman is doing more dangerous things for money than Judau was back in his early days of junk collecting on Shangri-La. Luckily, Taman is able to learn from his mistakes without having to lose his life. We also get to see an appearance by the Capule, the little mobile-suit-that-couldn't. Though it only appears one time here, it becomes one of the major mobile suits in the alternate universe series Turn A Gundam. However, at least it seems to be a bit more useful in that series.
