Episode 21: The Tension

Review by Brian Shea

June 20, 2005

Summary

The Turner continues to head through the asteroid belt around Gastogal. Hashamoja sneaks around while everyone else sleeps. He sits down in the bridge and looks up the prices on everyone's heads. The Slender Skala, meanwhile, blasts through asteroids, looking for the Turner. The Turner, hiding on a nearby asteroid is nearly struck and an alarm goes off. Amu wakes everyone up and they head for the bridge in order to defend themselves. Leccee wants to leave their hiding place, but Daba says to wait. The Slender Skala flies by them, apparently missing them entirely. Gavlet gets mad at Elaine for leaving the asteroid belt, but Elaine tells him cameras have been sent out that will sense the enemy. They get a message from Giwaza saying their unit has caught the most rebels and they will be rewarded with more supplies and Nei, who will be taking over. Gavlet gets angry upon hearing this since they did so well on their own. Amu spots Hashamoja in the hall, who takes her captive. He leads her at gunpoint to Daba, saying he doesn't want to keep running his whole life. He tells Amu to put a spacesuit on and he does the same. Lilith spots what's happening and tells Kyao and Leccee that Daba is in trouble. The cargo bay opens and they head out on Hashamoja's Space Lista. Leccee is about to head out to rescue Daba and Amu, but Kyao forces his way by her and goes out in the L.Gaim. Hashamoja contacts the Slender Skala, saying he'll hand over Daba for 70% of the bounty, which Gavlet accepts. The Space Lista lands aboard the deck of the Slender Skala and Daba and Amu are led out, tied up. Daba says he let himself be captured and that he has met Poseidal. He flashes back to his meeting with Poseidal. Gavlet is surprised at Daba saying that Poseidal controls everything. Elaine says it's not true, but Gavlet believes what he is saying. Kyao blasts his way toward the Slender Skala, battling multiple Space Graias. With their large numbers, they are soon able to surround him.

Kyao struggles against the Space Graias, but Leccee brings the Turner forward and fires at the enemy. Kyao tells her to be careful since he's getting fired on as well. Leccee destroys one of the Space Graias and Kyao tosses away another. Leccee says they should head back into the asteroid belt. Nei's ship approaches the battle and she heads out on her Auge, accompanied by multiple Bal-Buds. Gavlet is happy about them capturing Daba. At that moment however, the Slender Skala accidentally hits an asteroid, letting Daba and Amu overpower the guards accompanying them. Through some difficulty, Daba and Amu are able to release themselves from their bonds with one of the guns and head off. Kyao disagrees with Leccee's tactics of luring the Slender Skala into the asteroid belt. Space Graias hide among the asteroids and fire at the L.Gaim and Turner. Nei's forces soon arrive and attack the Turner as well. Angry at others trying to take the credit, those from the Slender Skala fire upon their allies. Amu and Daba continue through the halls. Gavlet gives his pilots permission to attack the Bal-Buds and make it look like stray shots. Nei contacts Gavlet, who says his troops aren't ready for battle in the asteroid belt yet. He wants her to withdraw her Bal-Buds since he already has Daba and Amu captive. Elaine finds out that Daba and Amu have escaped and Nei laughs at them, saying Gavlet made it up. Hashamoja and others chase Daba and Amu, who make it to the deck of the Slender Skala. They get in the Space Lista and blast their way out. Kyao finds them as soon as they get out and they escape together. Amu apologizes for letting Hashamoja get involved. It ends up he is grabbing onto the Space Lista. Gavlet heads out on the Ashura Temple and heads towards the Turner. Kyao pulls Hashamoja off the Space Lista, but Daba tells him not to kill him, even if he did betray them. Kyao tosses him away and he collides with Gavlet's Ashura Temple. Nei gives the order to retreat, and Gavlet wonders if Nei's unit is under Poseidal's control like Daba said. On the Turner, Amu is upset at herself for getting Hashamoja involved with them. Daba says he doesn't think Gavlet is a bad person, but Kyao and Leccee disagree, since he is so obsessed with being promoted in the Poseidal military.

Commentary

In what is essentially episode 19 all over again, Hashamoja betrays our heroes and tries to sell them out to the enemy. Daba is too trusting of others at times and this time it almost got him and Amu in big trouble. Not too happy to see them repeating the same storyline twice in three episodes. At least Hashamoja appears to be gone from the Turner for good. Maybe he'll join up with Gavlet on the Slender Skala. Speaking of Gavlet, Giwaza seems to be happy with his progress, yet for some reason is sending Nei to accompany him. How odd...
