Super Dimension Fortress Macross

In October 1982, Super Dimension Fortress Macross began airing on Japanese television and became an instant success. At its heart, the original series is both a love story and a war story. The series, set in 2009, focuses on a war between humanity and the gigantic Zentradi alien race. Directed by Noboru Ishiguro (Legend of the Galactic Heroes), Macross became a hit in Japan that was followed by a feature film. Released in 1984 and co-directed by Ishiguro and Shoji Kawamori, Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (aka DYRL) was a newly animated retelling of the TV series. Kawamori followed up in 1986 with the music video Macross: Flashback 2012, which was a combination of TV and movie footage, along with new animation from the movie's planned original ending. In America, fans are probably more familiar with Macross under the name Robotech. In 1985, Harmony Gold released Robotech, which was actually an amalgamation of Macross and two unrelated series: Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. The three series were shown together to meet US syndication rules. In combining three separate series to make one coherent story, many changes were made in terms of story and character names. In 2001, AnimEigo released a restored and uncut subtitled version of the series on DVD. AnimEigo's license expired at the end of 2004, but in 2005 Harmony Gold licensed the series to ADV Films. However, the DYRL? movie and Flashback 2012 are still not available in the U.S.
