Planetes

Based on Makoto Yukimura’s manga of the same name, Planetes aired from the fall of 2003 through spring 2004. A co-production of Bandai Visual, Sunrise and NHK, the series was created by an experienced, if not terribly well-known, Sunrise team including director Goro Taniguchi (Infinite Ryvius, s-CRY-ed), writer Ichiro Okouchi (Overman King Gainer, Turn A Gundam) and character designer Yuriko Chiba (Figure 17, Buttobi CPU). The series takes place beginning in the year 2075. Human activity in space has expanded considerably and debris has become a major problem. Hachirota Hoshino, Tanabe Ai and the rest of their team are charged with the disposal of this waste, a duty as necessary yet underappreciated in 70 years as it is today. The story boasts a level of realism that few science-fiction tales can claim. The series is now available on DVD in the U.S.
