Episode 23: Seeking a Miracle

Review by Chris Guanche

September 2, 2014

Summary

Layzner enters Earth's atmosphere and is pursued by Julia's Bloodykaisar, Giulla's Braver and several Solomcos. Julia opens fire on Eiji, and Giulla orders the Solomcos to join the attack. Eiji tries to explain to Julia that Gale was killed by Fouron, but she doesn't want to hear his excuses. Rei suggests counterattack after Layzner takes damage, but Eiji refuses to attack his sister. Eiji rushes in and grabs the Bloodykaisar, saying that Gale's last words were that Earth was beautiful and should be protected. Regardless of what Gale said, Julia vows not to forgive Eiji. She breaks free and punches Layzner with a knuckle shot. Eiji tries to play a recording of Gale's last words, but Julia doesn't want to listen. The Solomco pilots can't get a clear shot because Julia is too close to Eiji, but Giulla doesn't care because Gresco's orders were to destroy Layzner no matter what. Giulla and the Solomcos open fire, hitting both Eiji and Julia. As Julia falls toward the ocean, Eiji activates V-MAX and slams into a Solomco. He then uses a knuckle shot to punch the Braver and slams into it multiple times, forcing Giulla to eject before it explodes. Layzner then goes back to normal and vents exhaust, while the Bloodykaisar crashes into the ocean and sinks. The Solomcos pick up Giulla and return to space. Eiji flies above the water's surface and calls out to Julia as he searches for her. The Guerlain satellites activate after receiving a power beam from Gresco's flagship. Gresco asks if there's news from Giulla, but they haven't heard anything. Gresco thinks to himself that the subjugation of Earth is a sure thing, but they have to destroy Layzner's secret immediately. At the Edwards Air Base, Roanne notices that the soldiers are getting ready to fight. David wonders if they really believe they can beat Grados, but Arthur thinks it's better than doing nothing. Simone comments that all of Eiji's efforts are being wasted, and David wonders where he is. Arthur wonders if the Gradosians got him, but Simone and Anna are certain he's alive. The area rocks with the loud sound of the satellite destruction energy hitting the surface. Eiji sees the bright light from the satellites and emerges from the ocean.

The destructive energy sets off massive explosions in major cities across the world. The defense director tells President Dellinger that the East and West have joined for the first time and will have good news to report soon. In space, a combined fleet of American ships and Soviet ships launches space fighters, which are all quickly destroyed by satellite defense systems. When the bad news comes in, Dellinger comments that even the world coming together wasn't enough, so the defense director recommends using nuclear weapons in space. Dellinger makes the phone call authorizing a nuclear strike, and missiles are launched from multiple bases. However, the satellite defenses destroy all of the missiles. At Edwards, Kabus tells the students that nuclear weapons failed and the Earth might be destroyed within 24 hours. Elizabeth asks why he's telling them this, and he answers that he wants their help to save Earth. Elizabeth gets a call from the director asking for their help, and when David grabs the phone, he finds that he's speaking to Dellinger. David doesn't think they have a chance to win without Eiji, but they don't have time to look for him. He then realizes that Eiji came alone to Mars, and they're not alone. David vows to fulfill Eiji's intentions, and everyone agrees to go along with him. Julia wakes up and is amazed by the fish and water she sees around her. She then hears Eiji's recording of Gale's last words, where he remarked on Earth's beauty and called out for Julia. At Edwards, everyone puts on their spacesuits and are driven over to the tripod carrier. Roanne takes a seat at the controls and has the tripod carrier take off. Elizabeth calls Eiji on the radio and receives messages from multiple countries that their jet fighters will provide escorts. Eiji radios in and asks if everyone is on the tripod carrier because he plans to rendezvous with them. As Layzner approaches, Anna feels that a miracle might be possible since everyone joined together.

Commentary

This episode immediately jumps back into things with Julia attacking Eiji after entering the atmosphere. Of course, she's not listening to his explanation about Fouron being responsible for Gale's death. Since Giulla doesn't care much for her life, their fight is interrupted when he and his men open fire on the siblings. Doesn't work so well for Giulla since it ends in a V-MAX trashing of his SPT. It's a good moment later on when Julia sees the beauty of Earth first-hand and hears Gale's last words. On other fronts, the world is starting to band together to fight, but the powers that be still just can't understand that conventional, head-on attacks with their inferior weaponry accomplish nothing. Which is why the best course of action is turning to Eiji and the gang to do something, since they're the only ones who have been able to fight the Gradosians. I don't know what they can accomplish since the satellites are already causing heavy damage to the ozone layer.
