Episode 20: Mind Game

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

Summary

A short amount of time has passed, and Evil is back on the moon, inside the Radam base. He walks to the Tekkaman system pods, and looks at his sister Miyuki, who is in one of them. He comments on that if she was weak, she would’ve been rejected long ago but she hasn’t. If she survives, she’ll be a full Tekkaman like he is. If not, he comments that she’ll be incomplete Tekkaman, with limited powers, and only a few days to live. He speaks to her as if she can hear, and says that by the time she’s finished, their brother and the Space Knights will be dead. On Earth, D-Boy is taking a jog, and takes a quick look at the Space Knight base. He remembers what Aki told him previously, and is happy about it. At the base, Aki hands Freeman her report on the Spore Plants, and Freeman dismisses her. When Aki finally leaves, Freeman notices that she’s wearing perfume, something she doesn’t normally have. Milly is carrying books down the hall when Aki walks passed her, then she smells perfume as well. Milly asks her what it is, but Aki doesn’t pay attention. Noal is doing some target practice with the Sol Tekkaman armor, with Honda and Rebin keeping a record of the tests. Rebin says ‘he’ll hate giving the armor bate to Colbert, but Honda says he wont likely get it back, since Noal is now the only one so far now qualified to use it with his skill. Rebin jokes about giving Sol Tekkaman armor to D-Boy, but Honda reminds him about D-Boy losing his powers if he does. Honda tells Rebin to get back to work on modifying Pegas, when Noal asks him if he could have a short break. Honda says that they aren’t here for cocoa, but Honda’s joke backfires when Aki walks into the lab, with cups of cocoa. Rebin tells Honda that he’s been teaching her cooking lessons. Aki puts the plate of glasses down, and then Rebin asks Aki if she’s wearing perfume. Noal walks into the lab and comments on how well the Sol Tekkaman suit was built, when he smells perfume and asks if Rebin is the one with it. Rebin says that it’s Aki, and Noal is surprised she’s the one. Aki says she doesn’t understand what the fuss is, and walks out of the lab. Noal just stares at her, telling her to be careful in his head. Aki walks down the hall, when she notices D-Bo walking by. They both stop and say hi to one another, then D-Boy says that he’s been working out and needs to have a shower. Aki looks at him surprised, then D-Boy turns around and thanks her for being there for him, and says that his friendship with her means a lot. Aki asks D-Boy to clarify what he means by friendship, but D-Boy says she should already know. He walks down the hall, leaving Aki stumbled. Noal is waiting down the hall, and he asks D-Boy to have a game of racket ball. While they’re having their game, Noal starts talking to D-Boy about Aki, and asks him what he feels about her. While they’re playing, Aki is staring at the perfume bottle, confused about why D-Boy didn’t act differently. Back at the game, D-Boy asks Noal why he’s asking such questions, and Noal says that’s because he really loves her. D-Boy stumbles when Noal tells him that, and Noal asks him if he’s right. D-Boy asks him that if he was, why Aki loves him. Noal tells him that he’s known her for a long time and that she’s never had perfume before, and having means she has a reason. He tells D-Boy that he loves him for who is not, even if he isn’t perfect or a storybook hero, and says she loves him the way he is. He tells him that he shouldn’t keep his feelings for Aki bottled up, and goes to have another game with him. Back on the moon, Evil is in a Tekkaman pod, trying to enhance himself for his next fight with his brother. But in the main Tekkaman pod chamber, Miyuki’s pod starts to shut down, and it cracks open. Miyuki steps out of it and uses what powers she has to leave the base and head for Earth. Evil doesn’t feel Miyuki’s presence in the base and goes to take a look, and finds her missing. He realizes that she’s headed for Earth, and says that her early emergence was a mistake on her end. The light Miyuki travels in heads to Earth, and crashes in a place around Egypt, and creates and explosion. D-Boy’s forehead suddenly glows, and he looks around feeling something. Noal asks what’s wrong, but D-Boy doesn’t answer. Evil heads to Earth on his rider, trying to find Miyuki. D-Boy can feel Evil’s presence, realizing he’s coming.

Blue-Earth launches and Aki asks D-Boy if the coordinates that he gave her are right, and D-Boy says they are. They head to a deserted city (Which seems to be next to a large mountain, where they don’t say). They stop nearby the city, and Noal is in the Sol Tekkaman armor. He says he’ll check the North end of the town, while he’ll let Aki and D-Boy with Pegas check the South end, then they’ll join in the middle. D-Boy agrees, and Noal heads out, but before goes, he comments about how he likes Aki’s perfume. D-Boy and Aki start looking around with Pegas following them, but D-Boy thinks Evil may have left already. Aki says they should keep looking, then walks by D-Boy. D-Boy clears his throat, and says he likes her perfume, and turns around smiling. Aki asks that he noticed, and thanks him. D-Boy suddenly feels Evil again, and tells Pegas to watch over Aki. He runs off, and with Aki not far behind, and stops at a church. D-Boy enters the church, and finds Shinya standing behind a color glass window. D-Boy asks him what he’s doing here, but Shinya tells him that if he doesn’t know, he’s an even bigger fool. Aki runs to the church door, and is shocked when she sees Shinya. D-Boy tells her to stay out of it, and she realizes that Shinya was the same man she saw earlier (in episode 12), and realizes that Shinya is D-Boy’s twin brother. D-Boy tells Shinya to leave Aki alone, and Shinya says he has no desire to hurt her, but to get ‘acquainted’ with her once he kills his brother. D-Boy asks him why he’s afraid to fight and do more talking, and says that as kids he couldn’t beat him in martial arts, and couldn’t beat him now. Shinya says that they aren’t kids anymore, and Tekk-Setters. D-Boy tells Aki to find Noal, then D-Boy Tekk-Setters as well. Blade and Evil exit out the church and start fighting one another. Blade lands on a ski elevator while Evil lands on a power pole. Evil asks Blade why he doesn’t join Radam and rule, but Blade says that Earth belongs to the human race. Evil says he’s wrong, and attacks Blade, but misses and slices the elevator instead. He comments on how Blade feels for Aki, and Blade yells at him telling him to shut up. Evil asks him if he struck a nerve, then asks him what Aki would think if she could cheer him on. Evil flies off and Blade goes after him, telling him to leave Aki out of it. Aki is with Pegas in another part of the town, and Evil throws his spear at her. Blade watches in shock, as Pegas steps in the way and blocks Evil’s spear with the left arm, but it penetrated the armor and cut Aki on her right arm. Blade asks if she’s ok, and Aki says she’ll be fine. Blade yells at Evil and asks him why he did it, and Evil says he doesn’t know himself, but asks Blade what he plans to do about his rudeness. Blade fires his Vol-Tekkers at Evil, and Evil calls him a fool. He yells out “Psi Vol-Tekker”, and six different energy blasts shot out to meet Blade’s blast. Blade’s Vol-Tekker’s get overpowered, and Blade stands in front of Aki, as Evil’s own blasts hit him and Pegas. Aki asks Blade if he’s all right, and Blade shakily says he just got the wind knocked out of him. He notices the beams form a sphere, and the blast hovers to Evil’s right hand. Evil says that Blade’s Vol-Tekkers no longer work, as he now has the Psi Vol-Tekkers, which are more powerful and he can control with his mind. Blade tries to get up, but he falls back down to his knees and says he can’t win. Evil throws the Psi Vol-Tekker blast at Blade, and holds his hand out to keep the blast aimed properly. Suddenly an energy blast knocks Evil off balance, and the Psi Vol-Tekker misses and hits a building. Noal folds his weapon down and asks Aki if Blade is ok, but she tells him that Evil did some work on him. Noal asks Evil to fight him, and Evil is about to agree when his forehead gem glows, and he can feels Miyuki’s presence, and can see her Tekkaman form in his mind. He abandons the fight, leaving Blade, Noal, and Aki behind. Blade then starts to feel Miyuki’s presence, but he can’t make sense of it. Aki says they have to get Blade back to the base, and Noal goes to help. Evil is now in the desert, but he can’t feel Miyuki anymore. He says that she is a traitor like his brother, but is easier to kill, and knows he’ll eventually find her. At the Space Knight base, D-Boy is bandaged and in bed, while Noal is shocked at the news that Evil is D-Boy’s twin, and tries to make a joke about it. But Aki says it’s not good, since D-Boy hasn’t woken up yet. Noal leaves, and tells Aki to look after him. Rebin and Honda are checking Pegas’s damage, and tells Honda that even he doesn’t know when D-Boy is going to wake up. In D-Boy’s mind, he has another nightmare and sees Miyuki walking away from him. He begs her to stay and chases after her, but she slowly fades away. D-Boy wakes up, and realizes it was a nightmare. Aki says he’s been talking in his dream about his sister, and D-Boy asks her how long he’s been sleeping. Aki tells him he was asleep for three days, and reassures him that he’ll meet his sister again. D-Boy thinks that Miyuki is out there, and believes he may be right. In the desert, a storm is building, and a young woman in a make shift blanket for cover is standing about. It’s Miyuki, and she’s trying to call out to her brother telepathically, but her calls go unanswered.

Commentary

I don’t see the fuss over perfume, but I guess it’s a woman thing, especially if you don’t see one such as Aki ever use any. I’m just surprised at how everyone was shocked about her using it, is she trying to hit on D-Boy? I think it’s pretty obvious. Now begins the more tragic arc of the Tekkaman Blade series, the Miyuki arc. From what Evil said, it would seem Miyuki ‘forced’ herself out of the Tekkaman Pod, how he doesn’t explain. But in either case, that’s going to lead to tragedy. Once again Evil had D-Boy and the Space Knights in his grasp and could’ve killed them, but he lets them go to find Miyuki, but his attempt to find her fails. The Psi Vol-Tekkers are a damn powerful weapon, and D-Boy better come up with something and fast.
