Episode 3: Virgin Dream

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

December 29, 2005

Summary

Yumi seems to be dreaming, as she recalls her child hood past in a straw field. She says she saw a beautiful white and gentle demon one day, but also lost her parents as well. She sees a white light streak through the sky and loses her straw hat, and starts chasing the light. Off in the distance, a dead spidercrab is in the remains of a burning house, with what seems to be Yumi’s parents, both dead. Blade’s lance seems to jammed into the spidercrab’s forehead. Yumi follows the light to a large tree, and sees Blade standing there. He turns around to look at her, then suddenly fades into D-Boy. Yumi walks up to him and suddenly becomes her actual age, and says she somehow knew he was Blade all along. He holds out his hands, and she runs up to him and hugs him. Yumi wakes up in her bed, and realizes she was only dreaming. At the Space Knights base, Aki is reviewing footage of a large Radam ship that is behind the moon with Honda, and is discussing what to do. On the beach in the meantime, the rest of the Space Knights are enjoying their break. Yumi, Hayato, and David are on the beach, and David tells Yumi to have fun like Anita, Natasha, and Goliate are. Yumi tells David she had a dream, and he starts listening to her (while he reads a ‘play guy’ magazine). Natasha is talking with Goliate about Yumi'’s dream and how it relates to the White Tekkaman. Natasha believes it’s Tekkaman-Blade, but she says Blade went missing after the first Radam war ended 10 years ago. Anita believes that Blade is alive, but Natasha doesn’t know what to believe. Back on the beach, Yumi tells David that she thinks the man she ran into earlier with the combed hair and sun-glasses is Blade (D-Boy in this case). She says she doesn’t know how she feels about it since she doesn’t know him, and David tells her to take action and find out, rather than waiting and possibly regretting. Night time comes along, and Yumi remembers what David told her, and decides to go looking around the base. Hayato wonders what Yumi is doing up late when she passes him without noticing him, and misses Honda when he meets with Aki to tell her a worst case scenario regarding the Radam fleet near the moon has come to pass. Yumi continues to wander, but can’t seem to find where she ran into the one room, and just sits back against a wall. David is up in the base with another girl, and they see Hayato in the gym working out. Time passes by and Yumi is almost asleep, but her forehead suddenly glows, and she starts wandering around again. She eventually runs into the same wall back in episode 1, and a door opens for her. She finds the office like room empty, but finds a paper signed ‘D’ on it. Suddenly D-Boy wonders into room, and Yumi apologizes for her intrusion. She asks if she can call him D, and D-Boy says she can leave it at that. Later, D-Boy starts making coffee, while listening to Yumi’s story on how she first wanted to meet Blade. She goes onto say that she felt happy when a Radam Tree had changed her into a Primary Body, because she wished to be along side Blade. But she wonders if she’s still worthy of being a Tekkaman, and D-Boy tells her she is fine the way she is. With Aki, she is doing a computer simulation about the Radam fleet, with the key being the Radam ship. Back with Yumi, she believes that she has indeed found Blade, and believes he’ll understand. D-Boy starts to leave, but as soon as he gets to the door, Yumi begs him to stay. She runs to him and trips, but D-Boy catches her. She apologizes for what happened and asks to be excused. She asks him if she can see him again and D-Boy nods, but is shocked when she asks him if the letter ‘D’ stands for Dream. She starts leaving, but runs into Aki, and leaves as she sees her start a conversation with D-Boy. Two days pass, and Aki is briefing the Space Knights on the Radam Fleet. The flagship is absorbing other ships into it’s body, adding mass and plans to use a micro black hole to hurl itself into the Earth through means of sling shooting itself. Aki tells them that only the Space Knights will go on this mission, and tells them the mission will start in 3 days to stop the ship. As everyone leaves, Yumi asks Aki to talk to her. They head outside, where Yumi asks her what her relation is to D. She tells Aki she can’t go out not knowing what she feels, and Aki tells her that she herself is in love with him, and he loves her. She goes on to say that they’ve been in a relationship and have fought together for 10 years, and that she became a Tekkaman herself to help him. Yumi is in shock, and when Aki asks her to help in the mission, she suddenly slaps her hand away and says that he’ll only recognize her if she fights. Aki tries to stop her, but Yumi runs off. She runs into Hayato and asks him to help her with a favor. They both take Alpha ship into an elevator into the Orbital Ring, while the rest of the Space Knights are told to bring her and Hayato back.

On the Orbital Ring, Yumi and Hayato head into space, and Yumi apologizes for her bringing Hayato into this, but he says he also has his reasons for going. Back on Earth, Aki tells Honda about the conversation she had, and Honda finds it strange she’d like D-Boy so much to do what she did. An officer in the room tells Aki the Radam fleet is doing something different, and Aki is surprised. In space, Beta and Gamma ships catch up to Alpha, but they get word from Aki that the Radam fleet is changing tactics, and that they need them to see what’s going on. As the Blue-Earth craft move behind the moon, they see an energy line running from the mother ship. Aki then realizes that Radam doesn’t intend to absorb all the ships, and intends to blow them up behind the flagship. Honda then gets the idea that they’ll fire the flagship like a railgun, and goes to work to see what he can do. Back in space, Yumi, David, and Natasha Tekk-Set as they’re being fired on. They start killing off Radam after Radam Tekkaman, but there seems to be no end. Goliate reports to Aki that the fleet behind the flagship may be preparing for a self destruction, and when Aki gets an all clear on permissions, D-Boy has a talk with her. They quickly go to the beach where D-Boy tells her what Yumi told him. Aki finds it strange how Yumi thinks D is for Dream when it was originally for Dangerous, which Noal had thought of. D-Boy says they both spent 10 years getting their dream going, and that he wouldn’t let it end. He Tekk-Setters, and heads into space in a crystal field. Hiver, Vesna, and Sommer eventually get overpowered and have tendrils hold them in place. The Radam Tekkaman know they aren’t a threat and start getting ready to use their Vol-Tekkers to self-destruct with the Radam Fleet. The Blue-Earth craft can’t get close to help, and the would be leader of the Radam Tekkaman stabs Hiver with its lance, and the Radam Tekkaman holding her explodes, sending her floating away injured. Hiver starts thinking she’s failed everyone, as Vesna and Sommer start getting attacked and having their armor torn piece by piece. Suddenly a Lightning Eagle flies by freeing Vesna and Sommer, and destroys a large group of Radam Tekkaman. The light eventually fades, revealing Tekkaman-Blade. Aki has Tekk-Settered into the Red-Tekkaman and joins up as well. She tells the Space Knights they’ll start attacking again. She tells Yumi she’ll lead the attack, and will fight along side Blade. They start going after the fleet, and Blade once again uses the Lightning Eagle to clear a path. Sommer and Vesna are in shock to see how quickly Blade has decimated the Radam Tekkaman, which leads to Blade killing off the Radam Tekkaman leader. Hiver realizes that her hunch was right, and that D was indeed Blade. They head for the Radam fleet, and Blade tells her to use the Reactor Vol-Tekker to destroy the fleet in the back. Hiver does this, but as the ships are being destroyed, the flagship starts moving and lets the micro black hole swallow it too, and it starts moving towards Earth. Blade tells her to aim her Reactor Vol-Tekker at his own, and Blade fires it at the micro black hole. The blast just manages to move it, and it veers off course away from Earth, where it explodes harmlessly in space. The Space Knights congratulate Hiver, but when she looks for Blade, she sees him already heading back to Earth. She tells Red that she won’t give up on Blade, and tells she’s challenging her. Vesna and Sommer are shocked at what she said, but Red just says she accepts the challenge. Hiver is overjoyed, with poor Hayato just agreeing with her. The Space Knights start heading back to Earth, but Red watches them for a moment, then starts going herself. Blade thinks to himself that his dream is now finally coming true, in which Tekkaman can now protect humanity in a new form of order. Hiver thinks to herself that her childhood dream is now over, and that she’s realized who she is. They head back to Earth, with the mission successful.

Commentary

We have another very solid episode, but with a lot of development and good action near the end. This was big development for Yumi, as she finally meets D-Boy, but is nearly crushed when she learns Aki in already in a relationship with him. I find it strange how she’d go so far as to take on Radam by herself, but this mistake also saved everyone’s butt, since they learn Radam had a different strategy in mind. And at long last, Blade finally returns! His armor style is a little different, but it also gives him a more ‘mature’ look now. It seems he’s not affected by a time limit, and can now use the Lightning Eagle without having to go into his Blaster mode, which means he’s already more powerful now. The same ability was used by his sister Miyuki, but she was weaker and was killed in the first series sadly. Yumi manages to make the Space Knights proud, but even I’m shocked at her challenge to Aki. I don’t know how this’ll work exactly, seeing as D-Boy already loves Aki, unless Yumi thinks she can win him over. With D-Boy’s return, we’re now at the halfway point, with 3 more episodes to go. It’ll be interesting to see if Radam will continue to be the threat, or if something else comes up.
