Macross II

Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers, Again

In 1992, Big West marked the 10th anniversary of Macross with the OVA series Macross II: Lovers, Again. Due to the series being created without the involvement of Shoji Kawamori or Studio Nue, it is considered to be an alternate universe outside the main Macross continuity. Directed by Kenichi Yatagai (Megazone 23 Part III) and Ken'ichi Yatsuya, the series features character designs by original series designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, along with scripts from original series writer Sukehiro Tomita. Eighty years have passed since the end of Space War I, and U.N. Spacy faces a new threat from the Mardook, an alien race that uses music to control its Zentradi soldiers. The series met a poor reception in Japan, but it did slightly better in the U.S. when it was released by US Renditions. Following the collapse of that company, the rights of the series went to Manga Entertainment, which re-released it in 1995 on VHS and in 2000 on DVD.
