Gundam 00 Season 2 Ep. 2: Twin Drive

0
Summary

Three months ago, Celestial Being conducted a test on the 00 Gundam inside an asteroid base at Lagrange point 3. In the cockpit, Tieria performed a test activation of the twin GN drive system, and Ian commented that it’ll work if the synchronization rate exceeds 80 percent. However, an error occured and the sync rate plummeted to zero. Ian wondered why it wasn’t working, and Lasse commented that their last hope was the GN Drive from the Gundam Exia. In the present, Lyle asks Setsuna who he really is, and Setsuna mentions that Neil was a Gundam Meister. Lyle asks if Neil’s dead, and Setsuna answers that he died four years ago. Lyle asks if he’s supposed to inherit his brother’s will, and Setsuna answers that he’s not forcing him to do anything, but he gives him a thumb drive filled with information. Lyle comments that he could turn this information over to the Federation, and Setsuna reveals that they’re going to launch an operation soon against Katharon in Europe. At the Federation military headquarters, Kati reports for duty to A-LAWS commander Homer Katagiri. Homer comments that A-LAWS will oppose Celestial Being if they perform more armed interventions. He adds that he appreciates her skills because she has experience fighting Gundams. At the cafeteria, Kati is surprised when she runs into Soma and Andrei. Nearby, Graham notes their presence and sees it as Homer’s quick response to the Gundams returning. On the Ptolemaios 2, Ian removes the GN Drive from the Gundam Exia Repair to test it in the 00 Gundam. Tieria thinks it’ll work, but Ian is more skeptical about Aeolia’s new engine theory, in which two solar reactors synchronize and square GN particle output. Mileina delivers food to Saji’s cell and gives him a red Haro so he can browse their database. He asks how long they’re going to keep him there, and Lasse tells him he’s been marked by A-LAWS. Saji asks if they’re going to perform more armed interventions, but Lasse answers that they’re going to destroy A-LAWS. He explains that in the name of peace, A-LAWS has performed 14 massacres with tens of thousands of casualties, but all that’s been hidden from the public. Saji points out that the Federation arose because of Celestial Being, and Lasse responds that that’s why they have an obligation to fix things. Saji says people will die if they fight, but Lasse answers that people will still die even if they do nothing. On Earth, Billy stops Sumeragi from pouring another drink and says he can’t take care of her anymore. Sumeragi then thanks him for the last two years and says she’s leaving, but he stops her. Setsuna then knocks on the door, so Billy lets him in. Billy is surprised when Setsuna calls her by her codename Sumeragi, but he’s even more shocked when Setsuna identifies her as Celestial Being’s tactical analyst. Setsuna then tells her she has no place to hide now. Elsewhere, Lyle checks out Setsuna’s information and arranges a meeting. In space, Ian is disappointed that the sync rate won’t pass 70 percent, so Tieria suggests starting the system in Trans-Am mode. Ian thinks that’s dangerous and could cause the drives to explode if they overload. Saji uses the Haro to read up on the Gundam Thrones that attacked Louise in Spain and learns why she couldn’t regenerate her hand. Setsuna and Sumeragi ride the orbital elevator back up to space, and she asks him why he brought her back when everything they did accomplished nothing. He asks if that’s why she’s an alcoholic, and she answers that she can’t take it anymore. Setsuna says they have to fight to keep changing the world. At an orbital station, Sumeragi is shocked to see Lockon, and when Setsuna tries to introduce him as Lyle, he says his name is Lockon. Elsewhere, Shirin wonders if Celestial Being will work with them. Marina wonders if Setsuna is alive, and several armed men smash into her hotel room to arrest her.

At the mansion Hong Long asks Wang why she gave information about Celestial Being to A-LAWS, and she answers that if they can’t handle this kind of crisis, there’s no point to what they’re doing. Hong Long openly questions whether she’s interesting in conflict or worldwide change, and she answers that the world only changes at the end of a conflict. Regene has a look at the intel Wang sent to Ribbons and says he’ll pass it along to Homer. On an A-LAWS Baikal, Li Zhejiang informs Arthur that they’ve gotten the location of the Celestial Being spaceship, so Arthur decides to launch a surprise attack. Louise asks Zinin for permission to launch, but he tells her that’s not his decision to make. Zinin then launches in his Ahead, followed by several GN-XIII units. Nearby, Setsuna’s shuttle gets an encrypted message from the Ptolemaios 2. With A-LAWS forces approaching, Tieria launches in the Seravee Gundam. Sumeragi asks what their suit strength is, and Setsuna tells her that they only have the Seravee Gundam, but the 00 Gundam will soon be ready. Sumeragi then contacts the ship and sends over a battle plan, and Lasse is impressed that Setsuna brought her back. Zinin orders his forces to split their attack between the ship and Tieria, but they suddenly come under attack from GN missiles. Sumeragi gives Setsuna course corrections, and Tieria uses his bazooka to destroy a GN-XIII. The other units move to attack the ship while Zinin attacks Tieria. Setsuna tells Ian to launch the 00 Gundam and hands over the shuttle controls to Lockon. Setsuna then ejects from the shuttle and uses his thrusters to boost over to the launch catapult. Against Ian’s objections, Setsuna uses Trans-Am to activate the 00 Gundam, but the sync rate stops at 73 percent. Zinin breaks past Tieria and opens fire on the 00 Gundam, but just then it activates and blocks the shot with its GN field. Watching the battle, Ribbons wonders what kind of system that is. Setsuna then launches in the 00 Gundam and opens fire on Zinin. A GN-XIII tosses out a beam diffusing grenade, but Setsuna moves in close and slices the suit in half. Lockon watches and is amazed by the power of a Gundam. Zinin’s forces withdraw, and Regene comments that it’s surprising even Ribbons doesn’t know what kind of drive was just activated. On the Ptolemaios 2, Ian, Feldt, Lasse and Mileina welcome Sumeragi back, but they’re all shocked to see Lockon. Sumeragi explains that he’s Neil’s younger brother, and Tieria thinks to himself that Lyle isn’t Lockon. Billy tosses aside a drink in anger, and in prison Allelujah thinks of Marie.

Commentary

The second episode of the season picks up immediately after the first with the meeting between Setsuna and Lyle. While on the surface it seems cheesy that Lockon would have a twin brother now filling his role, there’s more going on here. Personality wise, we can see Lyle is pretty different from Neil. Also, we can see that he joined Celestial Being to benefit Katharon, so it’s obvious he has divided loyalties. That will surely come into play again later on. Marina gets arrested by A-LAWS, and I’m sure it has to do with her connection to Setsuna. We see more of Wang’s maneuvering, and although her true intentions have always been a mystery, it must be pretty bad if even Hong Long is questioning her. Sumeragi is thrust back into action, and it’s interesting to see how much she’s descended into the bottle over the last four years, to the point that even being involved with Billy doesn’t help. Using the Gundam Exia’s GN Drive, we finally get to see the 00 Gundam make its first real appearance, and it’s an impressive debut as far as mid series upgrades go. A long dangling plot point comes back into play, as Saji learns the truth about the Thrones and how they were really enemies. Whether that will change his opinion of Celestial Being remains to be seen. Now that they’ve got three Gundam Meisters, it’s time to go bust out the fourth.
