Gundam Reconguista in G Ep. 21: The Weight of the Sea

0
Summary

Water continues to spill out of the Ocean Ring into space. The G-Self initially has trouble moving under gravity. Kia can’t believe that he’s done something horrible because of the Earthnoids, so he fires one of the Gaeon‘s saber funnels when he spots Bellri. Bellri dodges the attack and is then nearly hit by a diffuse beam cannon from Chickara’s Gastima. Bellri then uses his beam saber to slice apart Chickara’s missiles. Donyell’s voice comes in on the radio, so Bellri reports that he’s being chased inside the Ocean Ring. On the Megafauna, the crew try to trace Bellri’s location and move out. On the Crescent Ship, Flaminia examines the bomb helmet on Elle’s head and discovers that it’s just a water ball. The Megafauna goes on battle alert as it approaches the G-IT Lab and launches the G-Arcane, Grimoires, Recksnow, Neodu and Moran. Kerbes wonders if they’ll be attacked since Kia had ordered them to the lab. Ringo notes that there’s a lot of commotion over the hole in the sea, so the G-IT Lab is probably shorthanded. Poligits fly by and order the Megafauna to dock at Rosario Ten. Kerbes pulls on a rope sticking out of the Neodu’s crotch and finds Noredo and Manny hiding there as stowaways. Inside the Ocean Ring, the massive mobile armor Conque de Venus launches on Kia’s orders. Z’Goggy pilot Rosenthal Kobashi is excited about the prospect of a real battle. Kia orders Chickara and some Re G-IT pilots to take down the Earthnoids without causing explosions while he uses the Conque to deal with Bellri. Bellri lands near a house and causes the residents to panic. Kia docks the Gaeon inside the Conque despite the fact that his cockpit is leaking and taking on water. Kia orders his forces to handle the Megafauna, but Chickara is already engaged with Bellri. Thanks to his combat experience in the water, Bellri is able to repel Chickara until Rosenthal arrives as backup. The Poligits stay outside as Aida and the others head inside the G-IT Lab, which connects to the residential area inside the Ocean Ring. Rosenthal attacks them and is able to deflect a direct shot from Raraiya until Ringo cuts her free. Bellri presses his attack on Chickara, who tells Rosenthal that they should head for the Full Moon Ship. Bellri is shocked when he sees the massive Conque and wonders what will come next.

Noredo and Manny sneak into the G-IT Lab’s mobile suit factory, where Harobe draws attention to them and Noredo uses her slingshot to take out some workers. Manny examines a data pad on the mobile suit Gundam G-Lucifer and tells Kerbes that it’s built to the Universal Standard. Kia vows to fry Bellri, so Bellri fires his beam rifle. Kun arrives in the Grod and fires missiles, but Kia warns her not to use them because of the hole. At this rate, he’s worried that all of Medispasea will be wiped out. Bellri pulls back and hits the ceiling that’s 3,000 meters above sea level. Kia sees that the damage he caused is beyond the level of what can be repaired automatically, so he opens up the Conque with the intention of using it to plug the hole. Kun argues with him about the Earthnoids, but he counters that if Medispasea falls apart it’ll kill hundreds of thousands of people. Kun deploys one of the Grod’s claws for Kia to grab on to, but he insists that he has to dive down to ensure the hole is plugged. Kun fires missiles at Bellri, and while he uses his saber to destroy some of them, a few hit the ceiling and cause a hull breach that’s quickly sealed. Kun curses herself for her carelessness and dives into the water to help Kia. As the Gaeon’s cockpit floods, Kia tells Kun that she and the others need to carry on with the Reconguista. The Grod is pushed into the hole, so Kun ejects her cockpit into space. The vortex of the whirlpool starts to calm down, and Aida tells Bellri that they should leave. They reach dry land and think they’re about to come under attack from the G-Lucifer until they see Manny and Noredo piloting it. Donyell calls everyone and orders them to meet at Rosario Ten’s port. Poligits guide their path through the town and agricultural areas. Everyone returns to space, and Bellri is surprised to hear that Flaminia and Yaan have escaped. Aida sees a large shape on the exterior of the colony that resembles a rose. Inside, the group is introduced to Venus Globe leader La Gu, who gives them heat-resistant coating as a gift. At dinner, La Gu blames his management for the recent events. Donyell and Miraji mention that if the six seas of the Ocean Ring are connected, the hearts of the people will change. La Gu says that if the people learn that humans mutate as well, some will give in to despair. Noredo asks La Gu how old he is, and he answers that he’s not yet 200, which shocks everyone.

Commentary

The problem that Kia created last episode is resolved here, but at the cost of his own life. Not surprisingly, he’s arrogant to the last and blames Bellri for what happened even though he was the aggressor and the one who actually created the hole. He tries to kill two birds with one stone by using the Conque to kill Bellri and seal the hole, but he clearly only succeeds at the latter. It seemed as though Kia was being built up at the very least to be a rival to Bellri with a G-type suit, or possibly a major antagonist/final boss. However, that’s not the case since he dies suddenly after just three episodes. At the same time, the rest of the group invades the G-IT Lab and captures a new mobile suit. Speaking of suits, Rosenthal’s amphibious Z’Goggy is a pretty obvious homage to Zeon’s old Z’Gok. The episode is capped off by a strange meeting with Venus Globe leader La Gu, who goes on about human mutation, despair and saying that he’s abnormally old. It’s an odd scene, and it occurs far too late in the episode. The battle and hole plugging could’ve been resolved earlier to give this scene a bit more time to play out.
