Following the near extinction of humanity at the end of Space War I in 2010, the Humanity Seeding Project was established to ensure the species’ survival by colonizing as many planets as possible. This led to the creation of multiple classes of long-distance emigrant fleets, starting with the Megaroad class in the 2010s and the New Macross class in the 2030s. The Island Cluster class was the next evolution of the emigrant fleet concept that massively scaled up the size of a New Macross class City ship. The colony ship, classified as Island 1, could support a population of 5 million, compared to 350,000 residents on the City ship of the Macross 7 fleet. Multiple Island class ships could dock with Island 1, forming two long chains of ships that could accommodate an additional 5 million residents. The Island Cluster still utilized the same protective dome as the earlier City ships and relied on a Battle class stealth carrier called Battle Frontier for its defenses.

In 2041, the Macross Frontier launched from Earth as the 55th super long-distance emigration fleet. Macross Frontier’s Island 1 was modeled on parts of Earth cities like San Francisco and Tokyo. The Island ships in the Macross Frontier contained a wide variety of environments, including agriculture, scientific research and a mall that catered to full size Zentradi. In March 2059, the fleet hosted a concert by superstar singer Sheryl Nome, popularly known as the “Galactic Fairy.” At the same time, the alien Vajra attacked the fleet, leading to seven months of increasingly fierce battles that devastated the fleet, causing many casualties and rendering multiple Island ships uninhabitable. Following a coup d’Ă©tat led by government official Leon Mishima, the remaining ships in the fleet traveled to the Vajra homeworld in early September as part of a plan by the Macross Galaxy to seize control of the Vajra. Ultimately, humanity was able to make peaceful contact with the Vajra and bring the conflict to an end.
