Following the devastation of Space War I and the near extinction of humanity, a mass space colonization effort was initiated in 2012 with the launch of the Megaroad-01 fleet. Many more fleet launches followed, but U.N. Spacy eventually replaced the Megaroad class in 2030 with the advanced New Macross class for super long-distance colonization. The New Macross class consisted of two docked vessels: a Battle class stealth space attack carrier and a City class colonization ship. The City class was unarmed and relied on the Battle class for its defenses. The Battle class operated as a carrier ship, but it could also transform into a robot attack mode like the original Macross. The Battle class’ main armament was a Gunship super beam weapon (aka Macross Cannon), and it was also armed with additional beam weapons and reaction missile launchers. As a carrier, the Battle class could house hundreds of variable fighters. In contrast, the domed City class resembled a typical Earth city and typically was protected by a shell that covered the dome, although this feature was not implemented on the Macross 1 when it launched from Earth in September 2030. Regular launches of New Macross class ships followed, but the scale of colony ships grew again in 2041 with the even larger Island Cluster class.
