Gundam 00 Season 2 Ep. 1: The Angels’ Second Advent

0
Summary

In the year 2312 a Tieren Space Type and Enact belonging to the rebel group Katharon fight with an Ahead mobile suit from the Federation’s A-LAWS task force outside the asteroid Lezorus. The Ahead destroys both suits, and two A-LAWS GN-XIIIs infiltrate the asteroid base and drop two time bombs inside it, destroying the asteroid. Later, Shirin discusses the asteroid’s destruction with fellow Katharon member Klaus Grad. Klaus is annoyed that the Federation attacked without warning, and Shirin thinks they should delay their rescue operation on the Proud colony. However, Klaus disagrees and says they have to rescue their comrades. On Earth, Sergei speaks on the phone with Kati, and she tells him that she’s been asked to join A-LAWS, but Sergei thinks they’re very secretive. He wants some inside information on them, and Kati says that’s why she’s going to join. Soma brings in tea, and Sergei asks her if she’s thought about a certain matter, but she hasn’t. At the Lagrange 4 colony Proud, Saji works to lay down exterior plating on the colony’s surface. Later, his coworker Eddie Miyasaka tells him he’s pretty good for a newcomer, but Saji points out he’s been on the job for six months. Two A-LAWS officers enter the locker room to arrest Eddie for suspicion of spying for Katharon. Eddie tries to flee and is shot in the back, and when Saji objects to what they’re doing, they arrest him too. On the Ptolemaios 2, Ian’s daughter Mileina reports that a new Federation Baikal class cruiser is heading to Lagrange 4, so Tieria decides to launch in his new Seravee Gundam. At Proud’s high gravity industrial sector, A-LAWS forces Saji and the other arrested men to push a large container by hand in the ore refinery. Saji tries to help a man who falls down from exhaustion, but he’s told to keep working if he wants to live. On the Baikal, an officer named Arthur Goodman commences the mission to take down the Katharon ship spotted near Proud. An automaton container is attached to Barack Zinin’s Ahead suit, and he’s told that his subordinate Louise is new to battle. Zinin then launches in his Ahead, followed by Louise and Araga in GN-XIIIs. Elsewhere, Setsuna sneaks into Proud and wonders if the colony’s being targeted. Another prisoner comments that Saji doesn’t look like a soldier, and Saji says he isn’t with Katharon. Setsuna shoots a man’s power armor in the back to disable him. He asks what the operation is, and the man answers that they were just told to evacuate. Outside, several Katharon Realdos attack Proud’s exterior defense units. A Katharon Virginia transport crashes into Proud and hacks into the colony’s computer system to search for the prisoners. Zinin’s squad arrives, and he opens fire and destroys the Virginia. He then orders Louise to stand by while he tests the new automatons. The Realdos attack Araga, and Zinin drops off the automaton container inside Proud. The automatons emerge from the container and start gunning down the escaping prisoners. Setsuna breaks into the ore refinery and spots the automatons. A prisoner standing next to Saji tries to escape and is gunned down. As the automaton moves in closer, Setsuna shoots it from behind and throws plastic explosives on it. He asks Saji if he’s ok, and Saji recognizes him.

Another automaton attacks, and Setsuna runs away with Saji. In space, Araga destroys one of the Realdos, and Louise destroys another one that was targeting Araga. Inside her cockpit, Louise breathes heavily. Another automaton attacks, and Setsuna again destroys it with plastic explosives. As they run through the colony, Setsuna thinks to himself that nothing has changed. Another automaton closes in, and Setsuna destroys it again. Setsuna and Saji enter a hangar, and when the door opens Saji is shocked to see the Gundam Exia Repair. Outside, Zinin doesn’t understand why the automatons have been destroyed, and Araga is attacked by the Gundam Exia, which is still damaged from Setsuna’s battle four years earlier with Graham. Louise’s eyes change color when she sees the Gundam Exia, and elsewhere Ribbons is surprised by its appearance. Louise’s head hurts from the pain, and Zinin continues to engage Setsuna. Zinin asks why Celestial Being has appeared now, and Setsuna declares that he’ll destroy people who do horrible things. Although his shield is destroyed, Zinin dodges Setsuna’s attacks and declares that a five year old Gundam can’t compete with the Ahead. Araga also attacks Setsuna and asks Louise to back up Zinin, but she’s in a state of panic and doesn’t respond. Zinin attacks Setsuna with a beam saber and cuts off one of the Gundam Exia’s legs, followed by its right arm. Araga speeds in to make the killing blow with his lance, but it’s destroyed by a blast from the incoming Seravee Gundam. Araga tries to attack Tieria from behind, but the Seravee Gundam deploys a GN field to block. Tieria then pulls out his beam saber and destroys Araga’s GN-XIII. Zinin orders a retreat and has to grab Louise because she’s still panicking. Setsuna is surprised to see Tieria, and Tieria says he knew Setsuna would be monitoring A-LAWS. On the Ptolemaios 2, Feldt is glad that Setsuna is alive, and Mileina says Wang’s intel is great. Feldt then comments that Setsuna will probably be surprised to see Lasse, and Ian is glad that Setsuna is back so that he can put the Gundam Exia’s solar reactor into the 00 Gundam. Klaus hears the report about Gundams at Proud and is happy because it allowed them to rescue their comrades. Shirin is worried Katharon might face a Celestial Being intervention, but Klaus says they both work on the same principles. Tieria tells Setsuna he’s changed a lot in four years, and Setsuna tells Tieria he hasn’t changed at all. Saji asks Setsuna if he did armed interventions five years ago and blames him for all the deaths that resulted from it. Because of that, Louise was hurt, her family was killed and Kinue was murdered. Saji then grabs Setsuna’s gun and tells him to give Louise and Kinue back to him. Louise shakes as she takes several pills, and Zinin wonders why someone like her is in A-LAWS. Ribbons is happy that Louise has a reason to fight, and Regene brings in Wang for a meeting. Marina watches news of a new Gundam on TV, Sumeragi hears it from Billy’s bed and masked Graham is thrilled they’ve appeared. Sergei gets a visit from his son Andrei who has orders to pick up Soma. Sergei asks when he joined A-LAWS, but Andrei refuses to answer. Elsewhere, Allelujah is held bound inside a prison. On the Ptolemaios 2, Tieria asks Saji why he didn’t shoot Setsuna, and Saji answers that doing so would make him the same as them. Tieria then tells Saji he’s lucky he didn’t get executed like other Katharon members. In the hangar, Setsuna looks over the new 00 Gundam. Later, he goes down to Earth and meets with Lyle Dylandy. He identifies himself as a Gundam Meister and says that although Lyle is a Katharon member, he’s come to make him a Gundam Meister, with the codename Lockon Stratos.

Commentary

Gundam 00 returns for its second season and wastes no time getting back into the middle of things. Although the first season finale gave brief glimpses of the four year time skip, here we see more clearly what’s going on. The Federation formed after the destruction of Celestial Being has a new law enforcement task force named A-LAWS, which on the surface resembles the Titans from Zeta Gundam. They’re opposed by a resistance group named Katharon that uses old mobile suits. It’s interesting that Shirin is one of its members, as is Lyle Dylandy. It’s also interesting that Setsuna has been on his own for the last four years and that the Gundam Exia is still damaged from his final battle with Graham and has a large cloth covering its missing arm. Since it had to happen eventually, Saji finally discovers that Setsuna is a Gundam Meister, but his future is uncertain. There’s also some question why Louise is in A-LAWS and seems to be a drugged up maniac, as well as an unknowing mole for Ribbons. He’s also a mystery, as is Wang’s reason for meeting him. Allelujah is locked up somewhere like Hannibal Lecter, and we learn that Sergei has a son, although their relationship is obviously strained. Lyle was pretty much a complete mystery during the first season, but as a member of Katharon, he must have skills good enough to be a Gundam Meister. We’ll be seeing some new Gundams soon, but Celestial Being is obviously short one Meister and needs to rescue Allelujah first. At this series midpoint, so far the show is picking things up again without skipping a beat.
